Requirements of a drill jig

⚫ Quick and accurate location of workpiece

⚫ Easy loading and unloading of workpiece
⚫ Prevention of bending or movement of workpiece
⚫ Ample chip clearance
⚫ Light weight
⚫ Prevention of loss of parts
⚫ Clearance for overshoot of drill
Drill bushes

⚫ Drill jigs use bushes to guide drills, reamers and other

cutting tools to W/p

⚫ Bushes are made of carbon steel and are hardened to Rc

60-64 to minimize wear due to hard rotating tool

⚫ Bushes are generally finished by grinding the inside and

outside diameter within 0.001 concentricity
Types of drill bushes

Press fit bush

Headed collared press fit bush Headless press fit bush

Press fit bushings
Press fit bushes

⚫ Press fit bushes are the most common type of bushes and are pressed
interference fit in the bush plates also referred as jig plates

⚫ Headed bushes are preferable to headless bushes because the collar

provides positive stop against the jig plate

⚫ Chances of the bush getting loose in the jig plate and sliding axially with
drill are lesser in the collared bushes

⚫ When the spacing of the bushes is close or the top surface of the jig
plate is required to be free from the projecting collars, headless bushes
are used
Types of drill bushes

Renewable bushings
Renewable bushings

⚫ For continuous production, the inside diameter of the bush is subjected

to severe wear due to continuous contact with hard cutting tools

⚫ The guide bushes require periodic replacement

⚫ The outside diameter has precision location fit

⚫ Bushes can then be assemble manually without any press

⚫ The renewable bush must be prevented from rotating and moving

axially with cutting tool by the retainer shoulder screw

Slip bushings
Slip bushings

⚫ When a hole in the W/p requires two operations such as drilling and
reaming – Two different bushes for the different tools
⚫ After drilling, the drill bush is removed and a reaming bush is used to
guide the reamer
⚫ This is accomplished by provision of slip bushes
⚫ Most common type of slip bush is with a flat on the head and a circular
cut out in the flange to facilitate quick assembly and removal

⚫ In another design, the head of the slip bush is fitted with rod
⚫ The rod is turned to arrest it against the shoulder of the retaining screw
to prevent rotation and lifting
⚫ Bush is rotated anti clockwise for removal- the rod clear of the collar of
the shoulder screw
Types of drill bushes

⚫ The bushes used for clamping the

W/p are threaded on the outside
⚫ The collar of the liner bush is
usually place on the opposite side to
take axial thrust of the screw
⚫ Liner bush is prevented from
rotation by a grub screw or flat on
the collar

Threaded bushings
⚫ An unthreaded bush can be
clamped with a spring loaded
lever
⚫ Pressure of the spring holds
the bush pressed against the
W/p boss
⚫ For unclamping, the lever is
pressed down to compress
the spring
⚫ Raises the pivoted bush up-
releasing the hold on the
W/p
Types of drill bushes

⚫ Special type of bushes: End

of bushes match the
Workpiece profile-
⚪ Provide better support and
resistance against bending to
the drill

Special bushings
Types of drill bushes

⚫ The centre of the drilled holes are

placed so close that it is
impossible to provide any drill
bushes in the jig plate

⚫ Little wall material between the

two holes for the bushes

⚫ Combined plate-type of bush-

number of bushes can be
combined into a single plate bush

⚫ Plate bush is screwed and

dowelled to the jig plate

Various types of jigs

Template jigs
Various types of jigs

⚫ Plate type jigs mainly

consist of a single bush
plate with provision for
location and the clamping
of work piece

⚫ W/p is located by six

locating pins, and clamped
by knurled screws against
the location pins

Plate jigs
Various types of jigs

⚫ It is economical to
make jigs channel shape
⚫ Simplify the location
and clamping of the
work piece
⚫ Such jigs are called
channel Jigs

Various types of jigs

Angle plate jigs

Various types of jigs

⚫ W/p has no suitable resting surface for

drilling can be drilled conveniently
with turn over Jig
⚫ It has feet and provide square resting
surface to the Jig during drilling
⚫ Resting diameter of the jig feet should
be bigger than slot of machine table
⚫ Turn over Jigs must be turned over for
the loading and unloading the W/p
⚫ Very Convenient for drilling flanged
W/ps

Turnover jigs
Various types of jigs

⚫ It has hinged bush plate

⚫ Bush plate swung a side as shown by chain dotted line- easy un/loading
⚫ Axes of Jig must be vertical during drilling-Positive resting of Jig plate
⚫ Open slot in the jig plate and swinging eye bolt ensure quick clamping
and unclamping of the jig plate

Leaf of latch jig

Various types of jigs

⚫ W/p having holes on a number

of sides can be drilled
economically with Box jigs

⚫ Jig body is generally shaped

like a box with a hinged latch
which houses bushes and
clamping screw

⚫ Bushes on various sides and

suitable jig feet on the
opposite sides

Box jig
Various types of jigs

⚫ Box jig for the w/p shown

in the diagram

⚫ It is located by four
profile location pins and
adjustable V block –
centralizes the boss and
pushes the W/p against
the location pins

⚫ W/p is clamped by latch

clamp with open slots for
shoulder screws

Box jig
Various types of jigs

⚫ Enough clearance below the W/p for overshoot of the drill after
passing through the W/p
⚫ It can be achieved by providing a resting pot for the W/p
⚫ Holes or slots are provided to for passage of the drill and disposal
of chips
⚫ Slots are aligned with the drill bushes in the jig plate
