Trigonometry

• From Greek word trigonon “triangle” + metron “measure”

• Trigonometry helps us to find angles and distances and used a lot in science,
engineering and many more.
• Usually used right angle triangle

Adjacent : next to the angle

Opposite : opposite the angle
Hypotenuse : the longest side

Sine Law

The Law of Sines ( or Sine Rule) is very useful for solving triangles.

The formula used is a b c

= =
sin A sin B sin C

Siti Salmiah
Sine Law

Example 1
Given that triangle ABC have A = 40, C = 65 . Find the length of AC and AB given
that BC is 6 cm.

Siti Salmiah
Sine Law

Example 2
Solve triangle ABC given that B=40
,b=5cm
,c=7cm
.

Can have two line AC or two triangle.

Siti Salmiah
Cosine Law

For any triangle :

The formula

Siti Salmiah
Cosine Law

Example 1
Find the angle C for the following triangle.

c 2 = a 2 + b 2 − 2ab cos(C )
8 2 = 9 2 + 5 2 − 2(9)(5) cos(C )

cos(C ) =
42
90
−1  42 
C = cos  
 90 
C = 62.2

Siti Salmiah
Cosine Law

Example 2
Find the length of z for the following
triangle.
Let z = c
c 2 = a 2 + b 2 − 2ab cos(C )
c 2 = 9.4 2 + 6.5 2 − 2(9.4)(6.5) cos(131)
c 2 = 88.36 + 42.25 − 122.2  (− 0.656 )
c 2 = 130.61 + 80.17
c 2 = 210.78
c = 14.5 cm

Area of Triangle

We also can find the area knowing two

sides and the included angle

Siti Salmiah
Area of Triangle

Example 1
Find the area ABC of the triangle for which a = 15 cm, b = 10 cm and C = 40  .

Area =
1
(a )(b )sin C
2
= (15)(10 )sin 40
1
2
= 48.21cm 2

Area of Triangle

Example 2
Find the area ABC of the triangle for which a = 12 cm, b = 15 cm and A = 52 .

Siti Salmiah
Area of Triangle (Heron's Formula)

We also can calculate the area of triangle if we know the length of all three sides.

The formula are

side of triangle.
2. Find the area of triangle ABC given that
a. B = 40, a = 10 cm, C = 60, ans = 28.263

Trigonometry Identities

What is an identity?
Identity is a statement that two expressions are equal for every value of variable.

Example : x + x = 2 x

The left hand expression always equals to the right hand expression, no matter what x equals.
