BINGHAMTON DEBATE TEAM

Dear Friends,

I would like to welcome you to the NDT 2016 held at Binghamton University. We really
appreciate the opportunity to host you and hope you enjoy both our facilities and hospitality during the
course of the tournament. Much of our hospitality this weekend is possible by a generous contribution
from the Provost’s Office. Beyond braving the weather to come to the Northeast, your attendance at the
NDT this year also means that you’re participating in one of the only low-waste national debate
tournaments! You will also have the chance to participate in the several large-scale fundraisers to raise
money for several amazing organizations like Leaders for a Beautiful Struggle (LBS)! I hope you take the
opportunity to participate and reaffirm that debate is much more than just the arguments we advance.

We also have a lot of great events planned for this weekend for you to enjoy. From Penny Wars
to some great receptions, we plan to host an amazing NDT that will keep you busy between rounds and
card cutting. This year’s speaker awards include a handmade quilt and pillows that are both functional
and decorative, which will have long-term durability and value beyond a trophy alone. Even if you are
not fortunate to take home a speaker award, I hope you leave Nationals with memories that will last you
a life time. For those of you graduating, enjoy your final rounds in debate. Just by attending you are part
of history and with your help we can make a lasting impression on this Earth (by not leaving one) and
upon the lives of people in the local community and throughout debate. Ultimately, what you learn and
advocate in debate rounds will not only help change the face of debate in the future but also contribute
to the needed deliberation to make the world a better place. I wish you all the best of luck in your
rounds this weekend—even if you’re paired against Binghamton.

Sincerely,

Joseph Leeson-Schatz

Director of Speech & Debate at Binghamton University
