OVERVIEW OF THE RISE 100 DAY CHALLENGE
Welcome to Rise!

Welcome to Rise! The Rise 100 Day Challenge is an opportunity to embark on a journey of discovery that
includes introducing yourself to Rise, creating a project that will benefit your community, reviewing other
candidates’ projects, taking a quiz, and playing a game. The purpose of our selection process is to look at
the whole you, not just your past achievements—but also your potential to commit to a lifetime of service to
others. To do this, we divide our selection process into distinct components so we can learn about you from
as many different angles as possible. This document describes the application steps.

performance, or film. We want to see your brilliance—whatever form it takes! We encourage you to think of
creative ways that your project could benefit your community.
M
The application process will take you through each step of completing a project: Focus & Research, Design
& Plan, Act & Reflect. At each step, you’re asked to share your experience by documenting what you’ve
done. Please provide your response in the space made available in the application form. Don’t just tell us,
show us! Please attach evidence such as images and drawings together with your application to show us
the work that you’ve completed.

about you and your motivations?

RISE APPLICATION - PART 2: OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
M
Everyone faces challenges in life and learns to deal with them in their own ways. This is your chance to talk
about the obstacles you have faced and how you have tried to overcome them. In this phase, we want to
learn more about how you have responded to adversity and what challenges you have had to overcome to
get to where you are.

RISE APPLICATION - PART 3: FOCUS & RESEARCH

Welcome to the start of your Rise project! This is your opportunity to demonstrate your interests, abilities,
and drive. You could try developing a new product (whether physical or digital); creating a piece of music,
art, performance, or film. Your project could contribute to a social or political movement, reduce pollution,
educate or care for others—the possibilities are endless! We want to see your brilliance—whatever form it
takes! Note that your project must be something that you start during the Rise application window and
specifically for the Rise Challenge. It could be a completely new project or something new you do as an
extension of an existing project. Along the way, you'll be asked to document what you do.

E
If you are working on a group project that you would like to use for the Rise Challenge, we ask that you only
showcase the areas in which you work on yourself. Please provide honest detail about your roles and
responsibilities.

PL
In this part of the Rise project, you will find a focus area for your project and develop a deeper
understanding of it through research.

Start by sharing the things you are passionate about (this could build upon your earlier Aspirations
response) and tell us how your motivations link to your project focus area. Why do you feel passionate
about this topic? What was your journey to landing on your chosen focus area?

After you identify your focus area, you’ll conduct research to deepen your knowledge and understanding.
M
Remember, research has many forms (examples: articles, videos, podcasts, surveys, interviews) and many
sources (examples: online content, libraries, social networks, local or global experts). In your answer
highlight how you did your research and your key research outcomes. How does your proposed focus or
project fit in the landscape of what others are doing? Explain how your research findings led to a better
understanding of your project focus.
SA

It is important to think carefully about your own assumptions and your unique perspective when
approaching your focus area and project. Keep in mind that the way that you think, understand the world,
and make decisions is linked to your own identity and upbringing. It is important to be aware of these
influences as you approach your project.

A good response to the focus and research part of the project will cover the following:

1. What is the focus for your Rise Project and how does it link to your personal motivations?
2. What did your research reveal about your project's focus area?
3. How did your research impact your thinking (assumptions or perspectives) about your focus area?

RISE APPLICATION - PART 4: DESIGN & PLAN
In this part of your Rise project, the aim is to identify your intended project goals and explain your
rationale for these goals. You also will design your project and create a plan of action, while
exploring ethical considerations.

Start by identifying your goals—what does success look like? What do you want your project to
achieve and why? Explain your rationale. Don't just tell us what you intend to do, but also tell us
how to expect it to affect the issue you are focusing on.

Next, work backwards from your goals to design your project, thinking through the many ways in

E
which you could reach your solution. Explain why you landed on your final project design and why
you think it is the best route to achieve your project goals.

Create a plan that will guide you as you implement your project. This could include logistics,
PL
finances, resources, a timetable, testing, a to-do list and more. It would also be useful to consider
how external factors could affect your ability to complete your project and how you might mitigate
them. Ensure you know the due date of the Rise Project so that the timing of what you will do is
realistic and achievable. If you are working on a group project, focus on what you are responsible
for and be honest about what others will do instead of you.

Last but not least, it is important before you start implementing your project to think about the ethical
considerations of your intended goals and proposed action plan. Ethical considerations may include
M
obtaining appropriate consents, secure and legal data storage, environmental considerations,
age-appropriate content, and respecting cultural practices.

A good response to the Design & Plan part of your project will cover the following:
SA

1. An outline of your intended project goals and a clear rationale for why you have chosen them.
2. A description of the solution you designed to achieve your goals and of your detailed project plan.
3. Ethical considerations you took into account before starting your project.

RISE APPLICATION - PART 5: ACT & REFLECT
The final part of your Rise project—Act & Reflect—is about implementing the plans you have
created during Design & Plan and reflecting on your Rise project journey.

Start by explaining what you did; in addition to a clear explanation, it also is important that you
document what you do. Don't just say what you've done—show it too! You can attach any evidence
you have together with your application. This evidence could be a wide range of things; for example,
pictures, data, charts, or a prototype—anything you'd like to share with us that demonstrates the
steps you took to complete your project and the outcomes you achieved. If you worked on a group
project, focus on what you accomplished yourself and be honest about what others did.

E
Next, share about how effective your project was. Did you meet your goals? Did your project affect
the issue it focused on in the ways that you expected? Did it have other effects (positive or
negative)? This is your chance to show evidence of your project's outcomes or impacts.
PL
And finally, reflect on your Rise Project. What went well? And what didn't go so well? Explain how
closely your actions or goals reflected your plans. Did you face any surprises or challenges? How
did you navigate them? Did you meet your goals? Either way, what are your takeaway learnings
from this? In hindsight, would you do anything differently? If you collected feedback from others,
share that too.

A good response to the Act & Reflect part of your project will cover the following:
M
1. What actions did you take to implement your Rise Project?
2. What challenges or surprises did you encounter, if any, and how did you adapt or persevere
through them?
3. How effective was your project?
SA

4. What are your key learnings from your Rise project and how will you apply them? What would
you do differently?
