Soil Test Report

Report on preliminary soil investigation for the proposed construction of Residential

Building at Moghalpura, Hyd, T.S.

Introduction:

Mr. Asim Alauddin has contracted to carry out preliminary soil investigation for
the proposed Residential Building at Moghalpura, Hyd. In order to design and
construct the foundation, preliminary soil investigation programme at the field
is carried out. The test results of the field have been interpreted/analyzed for
giving recommendation on type of foundation, depth of foundation and
allowable bearing pressure to be adapted for construction of foundations. This
report does not necessarily cover the structural design aspect, supervision and
quality of construction at the site. The method and procedure adopted in the soil
investigation is to provide the client a general idea in the shortest duration
possible and is in no way to replace the detailed investigation as per standards.

Scope of work

The scope of the soil investigation work as given by the client comprises of the
following:

a) Drilling bore hole in all types of soil/weathered/fractured/hard rock strata

by combination of Auger boring in soil strata and penetration drilling in
weathered/fractured/hard rock strata as per the guidelines given in IS
1892-1981.
b) Conducting calibrated Standard Penetration Test (SPT) at regular
intervals in the bore hole at selected location.
c) Observing level of water table, if encountered.
d) Submission of Geotechnical Report with recommendation for design and
construction of foundation.

Field investigation
SPT test is conducted at 9 ft below the existing Ground level. Initially bore hole
was drilled at specified location of the site with hand operated and Auger
technique up to refused strata as per the guidelines given in IS 1892-1981.

Fig. 1: Auger Drilling at the Site

Calibrated standard penetration test was conducted in the bore hole as per the
guideline given in IS:2131-1981 in order to know the relative stiffness of the
sub-soil strata.

Water Table

Water table was not found in the bore hole upto a depth of 9 ft below the
existing ground level during the field investigation which was carried out in the
month of November 2022, and however partial effect of water table has been
incorporated in the calculation of bearing capacity.

Soil Profile

The sub soil strata in the bore holes generally comprises of debris up to a depth
4 ft from the existing ground level followed by loose silty soil for a depth of
3.5ft and then medium silty soil for remaining depth.

Ground Level

Debris
4 ft.

Loose Silty Soil

3.5 ft.

Medium Silty Soil

1.5 ft.

Type and Depth of Foundation

Open isolated footings are permitted unless the foundations are getting
Bore Hole Soil Profile
overlapped. Width/length of the foundation should not be less than 1.5 m.

Safe Bearing Capacity/Allowable Bearing Pressure.

The average SPT N = 50.

Type of soil = Cohesion less (Therefore cohesion is not considered).

As per IS 2131-1981, Overburden correction is required.

Considering water table at foundation level (worst-case scenario).

Unit weight of soil = 18.1 kN/m3 (Calculated).

Unit weight of water = 10 kN/m3.

Effective Stress at 2.7m depth = 0.22 kg/cm2

Fig. 5 : Correction due to Overburden

Soil Test Report

Over burden Correction factor is 1.5

N’ corrected SPT after over burden = 35

As per IS:6403 Correlation of SPT with Friction angle is considered.

Corrected N 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50
Ø 28.5 30 32 33 35 36 37.5 39 40 43
There angle of friction is Ø = 37 degrees.

Interpolating the bearing capacity factors from the table of IS:6403 for Ø = 37o.

Nc = 55.63, Nq=42.92 and Nγ=66.19

Considering Cohesionless soil, the following equation is used to find ultimate

bearing capacity.

As cohesion is zero, the equation is reduced to:

Considering Sq, dq and iq (shape, depth and inclination factors) from the code
and Water table factor as 0.79 (Partial Effect of Water Table).

Soil Test Report

Ultimate bearing capacity = 1061.75 kN/m2

Safe Bearing capacity = UBC/3 = 353.9 kN/m2

Therefore, the recommended bearing capacity is 350 kN/m2 at 10 ft below

existing Ground level.

From Settlement Criteria: IS: 8009 Part 1 is used.

Figure below shows settlement per 1kg/cm2 pressure.

Fig. 6 : Settlement per Unit Pressure from Standard Penetration Resistance

For 1.5 m (assumed) width of footing and SPT 50,

Settlement = 13.01 mm < 25 mm

Modulus of Subgrade Reaction:

It is given by applied pressure per unit settlement= 26,000 kN/m2/m.

Recommendations

a) Type of foundation: Isolated/ Raft foundations are recommended for

the proposed structure.
b) Depth of foundations: The recommended minimum depth of
foundation is 10 ft. below existing road level or down till the hard
strata. However, the design engineer should arrive at an appropriate
depth of foundation based on actual design parameter and any other
structural requirements.

Precautions

a) Silty soil with pockets of weathered rock, if met in any of the foundation
pit shall be completely removed and filled with PCC and compact well
before foundations are laid.
b) Any variation in the soil strata other than mentioned in this report is
found at any other footing locations; the same may be brought to the
notice of the undersigned and suitably be examined.
