He (she, it) was They were
We use the Past Simple for an action, which happened at a definite time in the past. The time is
stated, already known and implied.
The Past Simple is used for the events, which happened one ater another in the past.
We use used to for habitual actions in the past, for past situations that no longer exist and to
show that something happened regularly in the past.
Time expressions which follow this tense: ago, last year ( month, week), yesterday.

Exercise I. Put the following sentences into Past Simple and mind the time expressions.
Model: Ted is tired. - Ted was tired.

1. Larry is a worker. 11. The cushions are small.


2. Our children are students. 12. The puppies are grey
3. Her father is a vet. 13. Sam is a dean.
4. Rachel is sad. 14. The hens are fat.

Exercise II. Make these sentences negative and interrogative.

1. They were here yesterday. 9. You were the most qualified lawyers.
2. Trish was a manager at Cisco LTD. 10. These houses were old.

Exercise 3. Choose the right form of the verb.

1. The sky ... clear today, (was, is)


2. The children ... at the theatre yesterday, (are, were)

Exercise 4. Put all types of questions to the following sentences.

1. The boys were in the gym. 6. Nash was in the cinema on Monday.
2. The birds were in the sky. 7. We were glad to see him at the party.

Exercise 7. Put the following sentences into Past Simple and mind the time
expressions. The first is done for you.

1. Richard tames a lion cub in the circus. - Richard tamed a lion cub in the circus last year.
2. Sarah peels potatoes for dinner every day.
3. They stop a taxi near their house.
4. You fry potatoes for dinner every day.
5. I always miss my mother on holidays.
6. We fish in this lake on weekends.
7. They type the letters on Tuesdays.
8. His father works in hospital.
9. The Browns climb the mountains every summer.
10. Lorna bakes the best cakes in the world.

Exercise 8. Make the following sentences interrogative and negative.


Model: Andy coughed and sneezed yesterday. - Did Andy cough and sneeze yesterday?
Andy didn't cough and sneeze yesterday.
1. The children clapped their hands.
2. Father slipped on the ice yesterday.
3. Granny peeled all potatoes an hour ago.
4. They tamed a lion last year.

Exercise 12. Put all types of questions to the following sentences.

Exercise 14. Change the following sentences into Past Simple, using ago, last,
yesterday. The first has been done for you.

1. Sandra writes letters every week. - Sandra wrote letters last week.
2. The lion roars in the jungle every day.
3. We go to the Crimea every year.
4. My fountain pen leaks all the time.
5. The plane flies high up in the sky

Exercise 23. Underline the correct verbs.
