2 - Final Square with 4 subdivisions

Plate 1
First build a big square following the sequence under figure
1. When you are used to draw the square, simply draw
marks at the end of the arcs, and not the entire arcs. For an
A4, the first line can be around 17 cm.

The final result is a square with four subdivisions.

when tessellating manually, we will draw our pattern

quadrant in one quarter (in this example top left in red), and
we will mirror our drawing into the other squares (orange,
green, yellow) by symmetry along the vertical and

horizontal symmetry axis (blue lines).

The next plates illustrate in the bottom line the drawing

steps for the manual 2x2 tessellation. The top line shows
the construction for one pattern quadrant for clarity.

Plate 2
We begin by drawing two long diagonals as the starting
point for a fourfold pattern (orange).

Lines in light blue represent the symmetry axis we will use

to mirror the construction lines of the pattern.
3 - Construction lines for 2x2 tessellation

For the mirroring we complete the diagonals in each 4

smaller squares (red lines).

Plate 3
For a simple quarter of the pattern, we draw an arc (figure
1).

In figure 3, when tessellating manually, we draw directly a

full circle.
3 - Construction lines for 2x2 tessellation

This circle is the equivalent of the mirroring of the arc in

each square.

Plate 4
Draw the construction lines of the step in every square.

INotice that mirroring the arc in the top right corner along
the symmetry axis is equivalent to drawing semi circle
(orange).
3 - Construction lines for 2x2 tessellation

Figure 2 shows the 3 reference points we find (green).

Reference points are intersection point we will use to draw
the supporting lines of the pattern.

Plate 5
Draw the construction lines of the step in each square,
except the small green line.

This small lines in green serves to establish a radius in a

further step.
3 - Construction lines for 2x2 tessellation

Notice that while mirroring you can directly draw lines

between two diagonally opposite circles (orange).

Plate 6
Draw the construction lines of the step in each square.

Notice that while mirroring the bottom right arc you can
directly draw a circle (orange). The top left corner is
repeated following a symmetry with the vertical and
horizontal symmetry axis (light blue lines).
3 - Construction lines for 2x2 tessellation

Figure 2 shows the 4 reference points we find (green).

Plate 7
Draw the construction lines of the step in each square.

You can mirror group of lines following the symmetry axis

(light blue lines), respectively when following a clockwyse
approach, in orange, green and yellow. We mirror the 3 red
lines of the top left square.
3 - Construction lines for 2x2 tessellation

When you will be used to tessellating, draw directly longer

lines from point to point accross the full pattern when you
can, it helps for the accuracy (dash lines).

Figure 2 shows the 6 reference points we find (green).

Draw the construction lines of the step in each square.

We draw the mirror of the lines from the top left corner
following the symmetry axis (light blue lines).

Figure 2 shows the 2 final reference points we find (green).

We have now all the reference points (figure 2).

We can ink the pattern lines (blue lines), doing a mirror

copy following the vertical and horizontal symmetry axis
(light blue lines in figure 3).
