will read an article about a woman who trains actors in combat skills. For questions 31 – 36, select the answer (A, B, C, or D) that you think is best suited by text. Mark your reply on a separate reply sheet. _____________ line 22 line 30 Kombat Kate James Stanton meets 'Kombat Kate' Waters, who trains stage actors on how to 'fight' on
stage. There must be a few occasions when it's really rude to turn down an invitation to head-to-head someone you just met! But now I'm in one of them. I was in a rehearsal room in a theater with a group of actors, facing stage fight director Kate Waters. I dragged her around the room and slapped her in the arm. Now she wants me to hit
her head. But don't be afraid, all this is completely pretending! Imagine there was a tin on my shoulder, she said. 'Now try to take it down.' I lowered my head according to the instructions, then lifted it up strongly, aimed at the imaginary box, desperately hoping that I did not mis-calculate the angle and eventually damaged her face. To my
surprise, I did the right thing. That's good, Waters said. 'Now you can try again without smiling.' Waters, known in the industry as Kombat Kate, is showing me how actors fight each other un hurtfully, and that includes sword-fighting. (She inspired intense devotion: when I tweeted that I was meeting Waters, an actress friend replied: 'She's
amazing. She taught me how to be a Secret Service agent for two days.') Perhaps the most famous play Kate has worked on recently is called Noises Off. fell down the stairs without breaking any bones. One of the battle scenes was quite close, Kate told me, with the scene we were trying now. I just slowed it down a little bit, she said
deftly, before inviting me to throw her against the wall. I obeyed, made sure I let her go quickly, so can control one's own movement. Push your opponents too hard, and they will hit the real wall. I watched her hit the wall before falling to the ground. She's fine, of course. It's my party trick, she said with a smile. 'Work all the time.' Once the
lesson was over, Kate told me how she became one of only two women on the official register of directors fighting on stage. Having been a keen martial arts expert since childhood, Kate has been doing drama in college, and a module in her course has introduced her to stage combat. When she questioned her ability to teach it as a
profession, she was informed of the register and the degree she needed to be accepted into it. It is a no small order: as well as a certificate in advanced stage combat, she will need a black belt in karate and master sword fighting, a sport she has never tried before. But she stood up to the challenge and taught the subject for several years
at a drama college before going free and becoming a combat advisor to the theatrical world. The play she's working on is Shakespeare's Richard III. This involves a famous sword fight. There are no instructions left by the great playwright apart - Enter Richard and Richmond: they fight, Richard dies - the style and order of the war is due to
Kate and the actors. Kate explained: 'I try to get as much information as possible about what a fight will be like at a particular stage. But because what I'm finally doing is telling a dramatic story, not all is helpful. The scene must be interesting and do something for the audience. Finally, of course, a fight on stage is all smoke and mirrors. In
our lesson, Kate showed me how an actor would stand with his back to the audience before a choreographed slap or punch. When the slap comes, it makes contact not with the skin but with air: the actor hits his chest or legs to make a sound of the slap. In the gym, I couldn't resist asking Kate how she thought she was going to pay the
price in a real fight. Will she give her attacker a hard time? She laughed, 'Oh, I'm going to be terrible,' she said. I just know how to fake it. However, I can't help but think that she is quite humble. 9. 9 Flip Over ► 31 In the first paragraph, the writer is aware of a critical attitude from Kate. B concerns of other actors. C the need to reassure
his readers. D has been in a similar situation before. 32 How does the writer feel when Kate mentions the tin? One worry about hurting Kate B relieved that Kate just pretended C was concerned that it might hurt Mr D's head 33 When Kate and the writer repeated the fight scene from Noises Off, we knew that A writer wasn't sure his
instructions. B Kate adapted it a little bit for the writer to try. C the writer initially did not want to do it. D Kate must react quickly to a mistake that the writer makes. 34 What does the phrase 'order not small' (line 22) tell us about fighting on stage? A Kate knows her. loves to learn about it. B It's something very few people used to be perfect
for. C Studying it requires a lot of obedience and respect. D Qualified to teach it will be a long and difficult process. 35 What does the writer tell us about the sword war in the play Richard III? A Its details need to be formed. B It's a particularly difficult scene to do. Its motivation is communicated through speech. D It is widely agreed to be
the most interesting of its kind. What does 36 'it' refer to in line 30? An information B a C-war a specific stage D a dramatic story 10. 10 Flip Over ► Part 6 You will read an article about the man who designed the recycling icon. Six sentences have been removed from the post. Choose from sentences A – G that are suitable for each
distance (37 - 42). There is an additional sentence that you do not need to use. Mark your reply on a separate reply sheet. 373839404142 How Gary Anderson designed an icon we see everywhere today. I studied engineering at the University of Southern California at a time when there was a lot of emphasis in the United States on
training young people to become engineers. That said, I finally turned to architecture. I just couldn't grasp electronics and the architecture seemed more specific to me. It was around that time that I saw a poster advertising a design competition run by the American Container Corporation. The idea is to create a symbol to represent
recycled paper. One of my university requirements is a graphic design course so I think I'll give it away. It didn't take me long to come up with my design: just a day or two. x37xx xx But I had arrows and angles in mind because on my course I made a presentation on wastewater recycling. I will give a graphic describing this process very
simply. The problem with the design I did earlier was that it seemed flat, two-dimensional. So when I sat down to enter the competition, I reth thought back on a field trip in elementary school to a press office where we were shown how paper was fed through rollers when it was printed. x38xx xx Three arrows which looked like folded strips
of paper. I drew them with pencils, and then tracked everything down with black ink. Nowadays, with computer graphics packages, it is very rare that the designs are quite simple. I think I found out I had won the competition in a letter. Am I excited? Yes, yes of course - but not excitement. x39xx xx So it seems, of course I will win! There is
a monetary award, although for my life I can not remember how much it is ... about $2,000? When I finished school, I decided to go into urban planning and I moved to Los Angeles. It sounds funny, but I actually played down the fact that I won this competition. I'm afraid it'll make me look I'm interested in graphics, rather than urban
planning. x40xx xx I remember seeing it once on a flyer that was on recycled paper, but then it disappears. Some time after graduation, I flew to Amsterdam for a vacation. I will never forget: when I stepped off the plane, I saw my symbol. It's on a large recycling bin. And it's bigger than a beach ball! x41xxx x I was really surprised. It was
quite a long time ago though. Since then, I have had more degree and worked for quite a few different companies, some more environmentally aware than others. I feel much prouder of the recycling symbol now than it used to be, perhaps because it is seen so widely. Maybe this design is more important to me than I thought. x42xx xx
There is more to me than a recycling symbol. 11. 11 Flip Over ► A However, I hate to think that the work of my life is determined by it. I realized that it seemed absurd for something that had been very successful. B I used what I saw to create the image. F Also, not much happens to the icon for a while. C I am not an expert in recycling
but I can definitely see its value. G I guess at that point in my life I had an exaggerated sense of self-importance. D I didn't think about it for years and it was right in front of me. 12. 12 Flip Over ► Part 7 You will read part of a surf instructor's autobiography. For questions 43 – 52, choose from sections (A – E). Sections can be selected

abilities to be recognized? 48 Is her enthusiasm for the sea recognized by others? 49 an acknowledgation that she doesn't think about what she's doing while surfing? 50 not worried that she stands out from others? 51 people appreciate her serious attitude to her surfing? 52 13. 13 Going on the waves Sarah Whiteley talks about her love
of surfing and how it started. One of my journeys to the sea began when I was a child. My mother, who used to surf, would sit me on one of her old planks and push me into small waves in a few centimetres of water. We both soon realized that I had an uns preventable appetite for the waves, something that never faded. Soon after, we
moved into a house almost on the beach. I can really walk out of the garden into the sea. Living by the sea is something you never take for granted if you surf. I opened the curtains in the morning and my heart leaped when I saw long perfect waves rolling into the bay. D Over time and after a few moments raising my hair, I made friends
and respected each other blooming between me and those who spent it all Time in the air with me. When I started doing some good movement on my surfboard and throwing a little spray on the air, they started to give me a bit of credit, so that if I went out when surfing was really big, they would shout instructions to make sure I had the
best chance. They know I'm not messing with it and I'm going to do it out there. Things became really interesting when I participated in competitions. In fact, I have participated in every national surfing competition for ten years. Competitive surfing can be extremely frustrating, since you can never guarantee waves at a certain time on a
certain day and there are a lot of hangings around. B Being the only girl in the water when I learned to surf never bothered me because I always tried to keep up with a brother who was especially good at sports. So I was there, a tiny, itchy thing to surf better by checking out other surfers and looking for new ones. I surfed four times a day
during the summer holidays, before and after school right in the winter months when the temperature dropped and the sea was really wild. I just can't get enough. E Now I have established a surfing school and I have a completely new point of view. When you start teaching something, you have to re-learn on your own. Everything you
have followed instincts that have not really noticed in the last fifteen years has now been passed down, and it becomes surprisingly detailed and difficult in the sections. But it's great to introduce so many people to the sport, and it's even better when you see their big stains when they first stand up and ride a wave to shore. Surfing has
taken me all over the world and now it feels like it has taken me home again. C Things started to become competitive as I got older and stronger. I've tackled more challenging waves: faster, stronger and more dangerous, but I've gained my confidence and accumulated experience, and it's rewarding to see myself improve. And that's when
the boys started paying attention to me, and they wasn't too sure how to deal with it. They seemed to think along the lines 'She's just a girl - she's not going to manage that wave, so I'm going to go in there and show her how to do it.' Convince them that I can keep myself in the waves that won't happen overnight. Night.
