“Oral Reading Performance of Grade 7 students of Fellowship Baptist College “

INTRODUCTION

Research problem

Learning to read is one of the most important skills in modern society. Not only does reading serve as
the major foundational skill for school- based learning, but reading ability is strongly related to
opportunities for academic and vocational success.

Studies

Oral reading performance is a key skill, which is a prerequisite for understanding as emphasized by
Tindal et al. (2016) . And Rasinski (2014) believed that, fluency as a skill feeds into comprehension
which is the ultimate goal of reading.

Gap

Thus, students who have poor reading performance in their early stage of academic life will likely have
problems in later academic stages.

Significance

For this reason, it is essential to build and develop reading skills in the early learning stage (Rasinski

2014).

Purpose of the study

Significantly, the purpose of this study is to investigate the present teaching and assessing oral reading
performance among Grade 7 students. It also provides details about the factors that affect students’
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the level of oral reading performance of Grade 7 students of Fellowship
Baptist College Academic Year 2022-2023.

This study aims to answer the following:

1. Demographic profile
a) Sex
b) Section
c) Previous school attended
2. What is the level of oral reading performance of Grade 7 students when taken as a whole and
grouped according to demographic profile?
3. Is there a significant difference in the level of reading performance when grouped according to
demographic profile?
4. What remedial reading materials can be propose to improve the oral reading performance?

HYPOTHESIS .

There is a significant difference on the oral reading performance of Grade 7 students when group
according to ;

 Sex.
 Section
 Previous school attended

Null hypothesis

There is no significant difference on the oral reading performance of Grade 7 students when grouped
according to demographic profile.
SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

This study would give positive contribution for the students, teachers, school, and future researchers, in
order to create and find alteration to teaching methods which applied in teaching reading in order to
help the Grade 7 students to overcome their difficulties in reading a text. This study result is expected
that students can improve their reading and motivation to learn.

The result of this study is expected to be useful for:

The Institution: This research is useful to be able to improve the quality of education and develop

the Oral Reading Performance of the Grade 7 students in school.

The Faculty: The teacher will be able to find it easy in teaching reading to Grade 7 students and this
expect to give useful contribution in Oral Reading Performance .

The Parents: The parents will be able to help and monitor their children in oral reading performance.

The Students: To motivate especially in Oral Reading Performance, the Grade 7 students will be able to
create more Enjoyable and meaningful learning.

Future Researchers :The researchers will be able to improved His/her knowledge about the Oral
Reading Performance of Grade 7 students and can be use to future studies.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

In order to understand the subject matter, the following key concepts are conceptually and
operationally defined.

Oral Reading Performance . Conceptually, refers as an indicator of students overall reading ability.

Oral Reading Performance. Operationally, refers as the outcome of students capability in reading.

Previous school attended. Conceptually, refers to any school including kindergartens, that the student
has attended.

Previous school attended. Operationally, refers to the school where they graduated Grade 6.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The focus of this study is to determine the Oral Reading Performance of Grade 7 Students of Fellowship
Baptist College in the Academic Year 2022-2023. The study would be done through conducting oral
reading to Grade 7 students within a give time to determine their level of reading performance.
