Quarter 2 | Lesson 2

Learning Competencies (Essential Competencies)

• Define Digital Imaging and Interactive Graphics using graphic organizers and

infographics . SSP_TLE-CT7DIID -Ih-j-1.1

• Modify raster and vector images using image-editing tools (e.g. gimp, paint, photoshop for raster

while illustrator and inkscape for vector images) SSP_TLE-CT7DIID -Ih-j-1.4

Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

• List Photo Editing software and Photo Editor tools online;

• Install Adobe Photoshop Express and

• Use Adobe Photoshop Express to perform the basic editing features such as crop, resize,

typography and adjustments.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Photo editing is the changing of images. These images can be digital photographs,

illustrations, prints, or photographs on film). Photo editing’ is

a broad term that involves making enhancements to change the appearance of an image. For example,

some photo editing techniques are done manually, while others are conducted through automated

software. Some photo editing is even done offline, on actual photographs, posters or other printed

collateral.

Other terms for photo editing:

• Image editing

• Post-processing
• Image/photo manipulation

• Photoshopping

• Image/photo enhancement

Photo editing is vital to any industry that requires content creation. Businesses use photos as a

marketing tool, while individuals use them to capture special moments in their lives. Images are an

integral part of business today, particularly in the marketing world, and image editing goes along with

that. Luckily, there is a wealth of free photo editing software options.

The best free photo-editing software at a glance

• GIMP – the GNU Image Manipulation Program is the best free photo editor around. It's

packed with the kind of image-enhancing tools you'd find in premium software, and more

are being added every day. The photo editing toolkit is breathtaking, and features layers,

masks, curves, and levels. You can eliminate flaws easily with the excellent clone stamp

and healing tools, create custom brushes, apply perspective changes, and apply changes

to isolated areas with smart selection tools.

• Paint.NET - Paint.NET's simplicity is one of its main selling points; it's a quick, easy to

operate free photo editor that's ideal for trivial tasks that don't necessarily justify the sheer

power of tools like GIMP. Paint.NET is a case where the apprentice becomes the master.

Created as a college undergraduate senior’s design project mentored by

Microsoft, Paint.NET continues to be maintained by alumni of the program.

Initially, the software was developed as a free replacement for Microsoft

Paint, which comes as part of Windows. Paint.NET has surpassed Microsoft Paint in

functionality and provides more advanced features as well. Paint.NET features an intuitive

user interface that supports layers, an “unlimited undo” tool to back out of any mistake no

matter how disastrous, various special effects, and other utilities. Where Microsoft Paint was

able to do little more than resize images, Paint.NET can handle more advanced photo editing

that you’d expect only Photoshop and other paid programs could perform.
• Photoshop Express - Photoshop Express offers quick and easy access to slide bar

adjustments and one-touch fixes for photos of all types. Prepackaged Effects make rapid

and dramatic changes to images to improve coloring and contrast; crop and transform tools

let you tweak a photo’s orientation and focus, and Details gives you control over sharpening

and noise. Its file type support is limited to raw camera files, TIFF, JPG, and PNG files, but

Photoshop Express is a freely available app that you can use on your Windows, iOS, or

Android device without hassle.

Pixlr.com - Pixlr provides two tools you can access for free: Pixlr X (express) and Pixlr E

(advanced). Both provide essential editing tools, limited layers, and relatively few stickers.
These tools are ad-supported, though you can upgrade to Advanced ($4/mo) or Professional

($15/mo) to remove ads and unlock additional features. This software is accompanied by 12

essential tools, from drawing on layers to applying filters and cropping pictures. You can even

add the “stain” effect, which makes your image look like a coffee cup was sitting on it recently.
