FLUID STATICS

I. PRINCIPLES OF PRESSURE
It is also called as Pascal’s Law, it was stated that, in a fluid at rest in a closed
container, a pressure change in one part is transmitted without loss to every portion of
the fluid and to the walls of the container.
It was also discovered that the pressure at a point in a fluid at rest is the same in all
direction; the pressure would be the same on all planes passing through a specific
point.
This principle applies to the change in pressure. Supposed, water is placed in a
cylindrical container of Height (h) and Cross-sectional area (A) that has a movable
piston of mass. Adding weight (mg) at the top of the piston increases in pressure at
Mg
the top by , since additional weight also acts over area (A) of the lid
A

In the figure above, it was explained that the pressure in a fluid change when the
fluid is compressed. (a). The pressure at the top layer of the fluid is different from
the pressure at the bottom layer. (b)The increase in pressure by adding weight to
the piston is the same everywhere.
