Moles and Mass Assignment

[17 marks]

1. Which compound has the greatest percentage by mass of nitrogen [1 mark]

atoms?
A. N2H4
B. NH3
C. N2O 4
D. NaNO3

2. How many moles of oxygen atoms are there in 0.500 mol of hydrated [1 mark]
iron(II) ammonium sulfate, (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2•6H2O(s)?
A. 4.00
B. 7.00
C. 8.00
D. 14.00

3. A compound with Mr = 102 contains 58.8 % carbon, 9.80 % hydrogen and [1 mark]
31 % oxygen by mass.
What is its molecular formula?
Ar: C = 12.0; H = 1.0; O = 16.0
A. C2H14O 4
B. C3H4O 4
C. C5H10O 2
D. C6H14O
4. For which compound is the empirical formula the same as the molecular [1 mark]
formula?
Ar(H)=1; Ar(C)=12; Ar(O)=16

5. 5.0mol of Fe2O 3(s) and 6.0mol of CO(g) react according to the equation [1 mark]
below. What is the limiting reactant and how many moles of the excess
reactant remain unreacted?
Fe2O 3(s) + 3CO(g) → 2Fe(s) + 3CO2(g)
In a class experiment, students were asked to determine the value of x in the
formula of a hydrated salt, BaCl2・xH2O. They followed these instructions:
1. Measure the mass of an empty crucible and lid.
2. Add approximately 2 g sample of hydrated barium chloride to the crucible and
record the mass.
3. Heat the crucible using a Bunsen burner for five minutes, holding the lid at an
angle so gas can escape.
4. After cooling, reweigh the crucible, lid and contents.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4.
Their results in three trials were as follows:

6a. State and explain the further work students need to carry out in trial 2 [2 marks]
before they can process the results alongside trial 1.

They should repeat steps 3 and 4 because there is a possibility that there is still some water remaining,
whereas in trial 1, it is proved that there is no water remaining given that the masses after the first and
second heatings are the same.

6b. In trial 3, the students noticed that after heating, the crucible had turned [2 marks]
black on the outside. Suggest what may have caused this, and how this
might affect the calculated value for x in the hydrated salt.

An incomplete combustion may have happened and as a result the x value would be lower
6c. List two assumptions made in this experiment. [2 marks]

Firstly, one assumption is the fact that all the water has been lost and that no water remains on the dehydrated
salt, and the second assumption is that the salt is a pure compund, and that it does not have traces of
other compunds.

There are many oxides of silver with the formula AgxO y. All of them decompose
into their elements when heated strongly.

7. After heating 3.760 g of a silver oxide 3.275 g of silver remained. [2 marks]

Determine the empirical formula of AgxO y.

Mass AgxOy-MassAg=MassO=0.485g

Ag 3.275 107.87 0.03 1

"AgO" is the empirical formula
O 0.485 16.00 0.03 1
Iron may be extracted from iron (II) sulfide, FeS.

The first step in the extraction of iron from iron (II) sulfide is to roast it in air to
form iron (III) oxide and sulfur dioxide.

8a. Write the equation for this reaction. (Hint: "roast in air" is essentially [1 mark]
"burn it in oxygen".)

2(FeS) + 7/2(O2) -> Fe2O3 + 2(SO2)

8b. Calculate the mass of iron (III) oxide (Fe2O 3) that produced by roasting [3 marks]
1.000 kg of iron (II) sulfide (FeS).
M (Fe2O 3) = 159.70 (g mol-1) and M (FeS) = 87.92 (g mol-1)

1 kg FeS x 1000 g FeS x 1 mol FeS x 1 mol Fe2O3 x 159.70gFe2O3
