Read the numbers and write them in words (cartolina strips)

Here are some facts about the Philippines

Total land area: Total water area:

299 404 square kilometers (within territorial limits)
150 759 282 hectares

Population (2010 census):

92 337 852

B. Motivation

Are you all aware of what is happening in our country? Are you aware of the
economic situation in the Philippines? What is the implication to our economy of the
dollar exchang rate?

1. Presentation

Problem:

Every morning Atty. Arcigalreads the newspaper. He takes note of the dollar
exchange. One morning, he read that the exchange rate of a dollar is P 46.468. How
does we read this number?
Present the decimal number in a place value chart.
Let’s use the place value chart to help you read the number.

Tens Ones Tenths hundredths thousandths

4 6 ● 4 6 8

Using the chart the pupils will read the given decimal, then write it also in words as:
forty-six and four hundred sixty-eight thousandths.

46.468 is a decimal number in standard form. It is read as “forty-six and four hundred
sixty-eight thousandths”.

C. Presentation
Read each number in the chart below.

Hundreds Tens Ones Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Ten

Thousandths
1 9 8 7 6
5 1 4 0
1 4 2 0
1 2 1 7

Like whole numbers, we read decimals from left to right. The digits to the left of the decimal
point are read as a whole number, and the decimal point is read as “and”. The digits to the
right of the point are also read as a whole number, after which we say the name of the place
value of the digit.

Let’s study this example.

The numbers in the chart are read as follows:

1.9876 – Nine and nine thousand eight hundred seventy-six ten thousands
221.7 – two hundred twenty one and seven tenths

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1

a. Flash cards one at a time. Let the pupil read and write decimal numbers.

1. 7-tenths 2. 3-tens
2-hundredths 6-ones
4-thousandths 5- tenths
5-ten thousandths8- hundredths 9-ten thousandths

b. Have pupils work in pairs. Each pair works on every station simultaneously. Each
of them will check their answers and present their output.

Station 1. Write five and three hundred ten thousandths in decimal form.
Station 2. Write 24 and 6 hundred ten thousandths in decimal form. Then write
in
words.
Station 3. Write 46 and sixty-three hundredths in decimal form. Then write in
words
Station 4. Write 92 ten thousandths in decimal form and write in words.
Station 5. Write four thousand fifteen and forty-one thousandths in decimal.

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

Let the class check their answers by pairs and present their outputs one at a time. After the
class presented, ask, “How did you find the activity? How did you read and write decimal
numbers?
Say: We read decimal numbers like reading whole numbers. Then say, the place value of the
last digit. The decimal point is read as “and.” We use 0 as placeholder.

F. Developing Mastery

The teacher will give other exercise:

Write the decimals that the teacher will dictate.
a. 267.249 d. 138.5611

Directions: Read then give the answer:

During the Palarong Pambansa 2015, Alvin Reyes ran the 100 meter dash in 12. 8420
seconds. John Santos ran the same event in 12. 4630 seconds. Write the decimal
number in words. ____________________.

H. Making generalization and abstraction about the lesson

Elicit from the pupils the rules on reading and writing decimals.
Let them explain how the decimal point is to be read.
How do we read and write decimal numbers?

 Like whole numbers, we read decimals from left to right. The digits to
the left of the decimal point are read as a whole number, and the
decimal point is read as “and”. The digits to the right of the point are
also read as a whole number, after which we say the name of the place
value of the digit.

IV. Evaluation
Read then write the following decimals in words and in standard form. Give what is
ask.

1. 6.9 6. five hundred seventy-seven thousandths

2.0.3923 7. Six thousand two hundred five ten
thousandths
3. 8.1954 8. Three and one hundred five ten thousandths
4. 805.0069 9. Forty-nine hundredths
5. seven and eight tenths 10. Twenty-two and eight ten thousandths

V. Home Activity

Write the following decimals in standard form. Write your answer on the notebook.
1. Twenty-four and six thousand three hundred forty-eight ten thousandths.
2. Six hundred twelve and five hundred-six thousandths
3. Three hundred thirty-seven and three hundred eight thousandths

Sportsmanship

III. Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities;
 .Review : Relay Game

Write the decimals that the teacher will dictate.

Mechanics:
a. The teacher dictate the decimal number.
b. The first pupil in a row will write his answer on a piece of paper as a group’s
answer sheet.
c. He pass it to his teammate next to him for his answer to the number dictate by
the teacher.
d. As soon as the last pupil in a row has written his answer he submits their answer
sheet to the teacher for checking.
e. The group with the most number of correct answers win.

B. Motivation
What percent is the molecules of carbon dioxide present in the earth’s atmosphere?

C. Presentation
Present the problem in the class.
“Of the 100% total molecules present in the total molecules present
composition of the Earth’s atmosphere, only 0.0325 percent is carbon
dioxide”.

Ask: What number is closest to 0.0325? Why? Why not?

What are the other possible numbers closest to 0.325?
What are the rules in rounding off decimal numbers?

A. Encourage the pupils to work in pairs. Give them time to solve for
the answer to the problem by illustration.

Solution: By following the rules in rounding off numbers.

0. 3 2 5
Round off place ( hundredths digit)

The digit o the right is 5, so it is round up.

0.325 rounded to the nearest hundredths 0.33

23. 7 4 2 6
Round off place ( thousandths digit)

The digit o the right is 6, so it is round up.

23.7426 rounded to the nearest hundredths is 23.743

 To round a decimal number, determine first the rounding place. Then look at the digit
to the right of the rounding place. The digit in the rounding place is the one that will
either be rounded up or rounded down depending on the digit to its right. If it is 5 or
greater, add 1 to the rounding place. If it is less than 5, retain the digit in the rounding
place. Do not forget to drop all the digits after the rounding place.

Let’s try these decimals:

Decimal Number Nearest Hundredths Nearest thousandths
1. 98.9834
2. 45.4536
3.65.1263
4. 76.1267

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1

1. Have the pupils play by pair. The pair that gets the most number of correct
answers wins.
1. Flash cards one at a time. Let the pupils round to nearest hundredths.
6.540 7.346 0.3892 0.0452 75.3460

2.Flash the cards one at a time. Let the pupils round to the nearest thousandths.
6.34571 22.78649 12.40935 6.1469 32.3487

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

After the group have played, ask,” How do you find the activity? How did you
round decimal number nearest to hundredths and thousandths?”
Expected answer:
 By following the rules in rounding off numbers.

 Give another another group activity: Pull Numbers to Round

Step 1: Divide students into small groups of three.
Step 2: Each student should pick up a card on their turn and keep it before them. Others can
see it.
Step 3: Step 2 is repeated 6 times so that each student gets 6 cards.
Step 4: Now the kid arranges the cards in such a way that they get the largest number
possible. For instance, if a pupil gets 1,3,5,2,7 and 4, he may arrange them as 754321.
Step 5: Once the group is ready with their numbers, they need to read their numbers aloud
with decimals and rounding off. Say, for 754321, the decimal can be 75432.1 and the
rounded-off number is 75432.
