CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Everyone can have a hidden secret capacity and capability for something that they

are sometimes unaware of. People's perspectives on things that are unprofitable in today's

world are such that they can easily discard them in the garbage or throw it around. Mark

Zusak (2007) quoted, "Maybe everyone can live beyond what they're capable of." He

indicated this quote to every human being, which is somewhat applicable to reusable

items. Similar to an okra plant, it appears to be a simple plant, but it can be capable of

producing environmentally friendly products that benefit a large number of people.

Glue is any of various strong adhesive substances (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).

It was widely employed in Europe during Ancient Rome, Renaissance, and Medieval

times. It makes our lives easier and helps us build, create, and repair both quickly and

easily while being cost-effective and easy to purchase. Thus, glue is basically part of

everyday life because we would be living in a completely different world without glue,

and we would most likely still be living in a more primitive state.

Due to the capability of mucilaginous property of okra that produces a sticky

substance, researchers came up with the concept of using them as a primary source of

alternative glue. This natural Okra glue will provide not only a cheaper but also a non-

toxic and safe product that is universally used especially by the students and individuals

who are interested in using it.

Lady's finger (Abelmoschus esculents) or "Okra" is commonly known here in the

Philippines as a green finger shaped like a vegetable. It is one of the many plants which

contain mucilage and is widely dominated in tropical regions around the world including

the Philippines (University of Sto. Tomas Department of Medical Technology, n.d., as

cited in Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) as Alternative Glue, 2016). Its mucilaginous

properties are used as a thickening agent for food, particularly in soups. The upper part of

the okra pods is commonly removed or cut and thrown prior to cooking and contains

mucilage which gives its slimy characteristic. This concept makes the researchers think

that this mucilage from the okra plant has a good potential to be an alternative glue. By

extracting the okra through boiling, separating, and filtration processes, it possibly

releases its mucilage which can be derived in making glue.

This study seeks to know if the okra (Abelmoschus Esculentus) can be used as an

alternative ingredient in making and producing glue. The main goal of this study is to

create an alternative glue that is organic and safe. Also, due to the rising price of

commercial glue in the market, the researchers have come up with an idea of a

homemade glue using the materials that can just be accumulated easily

Objective of the Study

This study aims to enhance the study of the Efficacy of Okra (Abelmoschus

Esculentus) as Alternative Commercial Glue. Specifically, the study ought:

1. To determine the effectiveness of Okra as alternative commercial glue,

2. To classify the amount of Okra that will be needed to produce alternative glue,

3. To identify the difference between the properties made out of Okra and other

commercial glue in terms of:

a. Viscosity,

b. Odor; and

c. Stickiness

4. To determine the process of how to produce alternative commercial glue made out

of Okra.

Hypotheses

The researchers assume that:

H0: There is no significant difference between the glue made out of Okra (Abelmoschus

Esculentus) and the commercial glue.

H1: There is a significant difference between the glue made out of Okra (Abelmoschus

Esculentus) and the commercial glue.

H0: There is no significant difference between the properties of commercial glue and eco-

glue produced from Okra (Abelmoschus Esculentus) in terms of viscosity, odor, and

stickiness.

stickiness.

Conceptual Paradigm

The concept of the study ought to provide a baseline data with regards to the

efficacy of okra (Abelmoschus Esculentus) as an alternative commercial glue are shown

in the table. The first figure shows how the researchers going to determine the

effectiveness and the amount of the raw material that will be used in the process shown in

the second figure. Through the process of applying some methods such as the preparation

of materials needed as well as the testing and interpretation of the collected data from the

experimentation that must undergo, will bring us to the output or the expected product of

the study. The finished product will lead us into an eco-friendly alternative commercial

glue which is a low-cost, non-toxic, and has bio-compatibility glue that is available to

everyone due to okra’s high availability in nature.

Significance of the Study

This study aimed to determine the efficacy of okra (Abelmoschus Esculentus) as

alternative commercial glue. This study is designed to show the benefits on how this

research help the following sectors.

Students. Students will have a better understanding of the efficacy of okra

(Abelmoschus Esculentus) as alternative commercial glue and will be aware that there

are benefits that can attend to their needs.

Teachers. Teachers can use the product of this study in making instructional materials

for natural alternative glue.

Consumers. Regular people that uses glue can use alternative natural glue instead of

commercial glue regarding on pasting their materials or creating a hand-on project.

Farmers. Farmers having plantation of okra improve their productivity and profitability

that they can gain especially that they have ideas about the importance of okra.

Future researchers. Future researchers can use this study as reference to their further

studies. This can also serve as their guide for researchers who have the same interest.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study focuses on the effectiveness of okra in behaving as glue by extracting

mucilage from it. That has the ability to produce a sticky texture like glue. The goal of

this study is to develop a less expensive product that can be used by everyone, especially

students and people who want to be frugal when purchasing materials in order to save

money since this study can be conducted at home as well as the materials needed can be

found at home. The limitation of the product is that it can only be used in pasting and

should not be applied for other purposes. The mucilage to be used only comes from okra

and not other fruits. This study will focus only on okra fruit and its effectiveness as an

adhesive.
