The city that would become one of the world’s largest metropolises started out
as a small fishing village, first settled around 3,000 B.C.  

A massive earthquake destroyed nearly half of Tokyo in 1923.

Just before noon on September 1, 1923, a massive earthquake, measuring

between 7.9 and 8.4 on the Richter scale, erupted just 30 miles south of Tokyo
Unleashing a massive burst of energy that wreaked unprecedented damage on
both Tokyo and the nearby city of Yokohama, Japan’s largest port.  

A massive earthquake destroyed nearly half of Tokyo in 1923. The Allied

bombing of Tokyo was just as destructive as that of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

What is Tokyo exactly?  Is Tokyo a city or is it a state/province? Tokyo is often

compared with some of world’s largest cities such as New York, London or Paris, so it is
natural most people overseas would think that Tokyo is simply a city just like any other
major city of the world. –

Whilst Japan requires more than one visit to cover its vast grounds, there is no better
introduction than jumping headfirst into its huge capital – the buzzing Tokyo metropolis.

Tokyo’s population is projected to start declining once it reaches its peak in 2020. Also
taking into consideration changes to the structure of society such as the graying of the
population

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is pushing toward its goal of becoming the world’s
best city where a balance between economic affluence and the quality of life is achieved
and anyone can fully enjoy life.

The unique sensibility, high culture and education which grew into maturity in the
Edo period became the driving force in the rapid modernisation of Tokyo, helping
it to establish a strong position in internatiazonal society.
