A. Circle the letter of the best answer.

1. When the value of α is increased, the probability of committing a type I error is

a. Decreased c. The same
b. Increased d. None of the above

2. If you wish to test the claim that the mean of the population is 100, the appropriate null
hypothesis is
a. ̅ = 100 c. μ ≥100
b. μ ≤ 100 d. μ =100

3. The degrees of freedom for the t-test for means are

a. 1 c. n – 1
b. n d. None of the above

4. For the t test, one uses _______ instead of σ.

a. N c. s
b. X2 d. t

5. No error is committed when the null hypothesis is rejected when it is false.

a. True b. False

6. The test value separates the critical region from the noncritical region.
a. True b. False

7. Rejecting the null hypothesis when it is true is called a(n) _____________.

a. Type I error c. Power of test
b. Type II error d. None of the above

8. The probability of a type II error is referred to as _________.

a. Type I error c. Power of test
b. Type II error d. None of the above

9. To test the claim that the mean is greater than 87, you would use a _________.
a. Right-tailed test c. Two-tailed test
b. Left-tailed test d. None of the above

10. When the population standard deviation is not known, researchers use a ___________ to test a
claim about a mean. If the sample size is less than 30, the population values need to be normally or
approximately normally distributed.
a. z-test c. Pearson r
b. t-test d. Chi-square

B. Test the hypothesis using 7-step traditional method (10 pts. Each).

1. An advertisement claims that Fasto Stomach Calm will provide relief from indigestion in less than
10 minutes. For a test of the claim, 35 individuals were given the product; the average time until
relief was 9.25 minutes. From past studies, the standard deviation of the population is known to be
2 minutes. Can you conclude that the claim is justified? Find the P-value and let α = 0.05.

Given:
N= 35 σ= 2 μ = 10 a= 0.05 x̄= 9.25

STEP 1: H0: μ =10 or μ ≥ 10 (null hypothesis) , Ha: μ ˂ 10 minutes (claim)

STEP 2: a= 0.05

STEP 3: One-tailed Test

STEP 4: Z test (single population mean)

Za = -1.645
STEP 5: Compute:

, z= 9.25−10 = -2.22

2/ √35

STEP 6: Decide: Reject the null hypothesis, since computed z test ( -2.22) is less than the critical
value (-1.645). Computed z value did not fall within the rejection region.
STEP 7: Conclude: Therefore, the claim is accepted that Fasto Stomach Calm will provide relief
from indigestion in less than 10 minutes.

2. The average price of a sample of 12 bottles of diet salad dressing taken from different stores is
$1.43. The standard deviation is $0.09. The average price of a sample of 16 low-calorie frozen
desserts is $1.03. The standard deviation is $0.10. At α = 0.05, is the price of salad dressings
significantly higher than the price of frozen desserts?
Given:
x̄1 = 1.43 x̄2= 1.03

S1= 0.09 S2= 0.10

N1= 12 N2= 16

a= 0.05

STEP 1: H0: μ1 = μ2 or x̄1 = x̄2 , Ha: μ1 ˃ μ2 or x̄1 ˃ x̄2

STEP 2: a= 0.05

STEP 3: One-tailed test

STEP 4: Z-test (two population

means) Zcrit = 1.645, 1.43 – 1.03

STEP 5: Compute:

z= 1.43−1.03
√0.092+0.102 = 11.094 or 11.09
12 16

STEP 6: Decide: Reject the null hypothesis, since computed z-test (11.09) is greater than
critical value (1.645). Computed z value did not fall within the reject region.
STEP 7: Conclude: Therefore, there is sufficient evidence of claim that the price of salad
dressings is significantly higher than the price of frozen desserts.
