have limited space – because each has two different varieties of fruit
growing on the same tree! Each tree is meticulously ‘double-grafted’

means they will remain compact in your garden and are
happy growing in large pots on your patio. They are already

Merry Christmas! Forgive me if I sound a little too merry but I’m feeling rather intoxicated by
all the festive smells filling my home. Determined not to let the cost-of-living crisis dampen
the celebrations, I’ve rather overdone it on the thrifty decorating front. I was perhaps a tad too
enthusiastic in my gathering of garden-grown foliage and foraging of twiggy treasures in my local
Woodland Trust wood (find your nearest, and the Trust’s foraging guidelines, at woodlandtrust.
org.uk) and at a local fir-tree farm (“Help yourself,” I was joyfully told). So there isn’t a staircase
spindle, shelf or windowsill that’s not heaving with heavenly greenery. My should’ve-been-
pruned-last-summer bay tree yielded plenty of long bendy stems, which I’ve plaited into little
wreaths, and the glossy leaves are incredibly fragrant now they’re basking in the central
heating. The sweet scent of all the pine sprigs I’ve wired into long garlands pairs well
with the sharp tang of the eucalyptus stems standing in old bottles here, there
and everywhere. But I honestly think I might keel over once the basket of
paperwhite daffs I planted last month comes into flower too. Best then, I
regularly escape to the garden for some fresh air and my new favourite patio
tipple. If you haven’t discovered it yet, do treat yourself to a bottle of The
Gourmet Mulling Syrup (£7.99, lakeland.co.uk) – warm a mug of apple
juice in the microwave, pour in a slug of syrup, drop in a slice of lime,

INSPIRATION
This month we’ve been inspired by the account
of Britain’s only museum dedicated to gardens
@gardenmuseum. It’s a veritable curation of pics
and info that champions the history, design and
art of gardens, so you’ll learn a whole spectrum
of interesting garden-related facts as well as find
eclectic works of art and beautiful old photos to
ponder over. If you find yourself drawn in (and
you will!) then you can visit the actual museum
in central London.
Blackcurrants
PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK
Now is the perfect time to plant juicy blackcurrants, divine in jams and crumbles,
with an affordable bareroot shrub such as Blackcurrant ‘Big Ben’ (£10.99,
thompson-morgan.com). The plants can tolerate some shade so don’t fret if there’s
no room on the sunny side of your garden but do give them lots of space in your
garden or a large container, as once established, they are enthusiastic growers.

remove old flower stems and damaged or dead leaves to encourage new growth
at the base. Water and feed regularly in summer with a high potash fertiliser such

CHEEKY REINDEER
This pared-back wooden reindeer might
not have a red nose but he definitely has
bags of Nordic charm! Birch logs and
twigs are best as the bark is so pretty, but
any hardwood around will do.
Choose a log around 10cm in diameter
for the body and saw into a 40cm length.
Next, find a log around 5-6cm in diameter
for the head and saw a 20cm-long section,
making an angle cut to suggest the nose.
Collect five sturdy straight-ish twigs and
cut four to 40cm in length for legs, and
one to 15cm for the neck. You’ll also need
two multi-branched twigs for antlers.
Selecting drill bits that are a similar size
to the relevant twigs, drill leg holes, neck
and antler holes at a slight angle, into the
logs. Then assemble the reindeer, making
the holes a tiny bit bigger if needed
but still aiming for a tight fit, and using
waterproof glue if necessary.
Stand him up and trim a leg or two to
make him stable if needed. If you find he
topples forward, the easiest fix is to trim
the back two legs. Don’t forget to name
your reindeer – we called ours Woody!

Mini makeover
of the month!
When we moved to our newbuild near the coast, we had to cope
with builders’ rubble and a high water level. The original lawn was
often waterlogged and not much survived. We decided to give
it a makeover and create a seaside effect with lots of stones and
pebbles surrounded by warm-coloured paving slabs. Most of our
plants are in pots, which can be moved around to freshen things up.
