Academic Performance

Students are the key assets of universities. The students’ performance plays an important role in

producing best quality graduates who will become great leaders and manpower for the country thus

responsible for the country’s economic and social development. Academic achievement is one of the

major factors considered by employers in hiring workers especially for the fresh graduates. Thus,

students have to put the greatest effort in their study to obtain good grades and to prepare themselves

for future opportunities in their career at the same time to fulfill the employer’s demand. According to

Minnesota (2007) “the higher education performance is depends upon the academic performance of

graduate students. Durden and Ellis quoted Staffolani and Bratti, (2002) who observed that “the

measurement of students previous educational outcomes are the most important indicators of students

future achievement; this refers that the higher the previous appearance, the better will the student’s

academic performance in future endeavors be.

Apostol et al. (2020), states that there are many methods and ways of learning which you can

boost your academic performance. Also as Dewey (2013) said, education is a process of experience,

developing the best basic experience of studying like having educational applications can be a good way

of learning experience. In addition, as Zafirakou (2018) and Dewey (2013), ideas collide, educational

application may help students to have great learning experience. Educational application may help

students to have great learning experience and that theory is more relevant to current study because

the current study states that the mobile application will provide the students with some knowledge on

how the academic application can affect their academic performance.

Face-To-Face Classes

Philippines ready to open the schools for the students to go for face-to-face classes

despites having been one of the longest and strictest lockdown in the world.(World Health

Organization (WHO)) Face-to-face classes interaction must be carefully planned to ensure the

safety of students as well as teacher and school staff in a staged fashion especially in following

physical distancing, Planning and execution of school health protocol during this pandemic must

be supported by the truthful data being given various institution Sarmiento P, and Tolentino R

(2021).

According to Oyedepo et al. (2018) face-to-face classes during pandemic generates

environmental impact and they need to be measured in order to subsidize the search towards

sustainability solution.(teshnizi et al. (2018) The understanding of the environmental impact

existing on a university campus can better subsidize project of different types , such as

administrative, research or educational projects. For example debate in their study, possibilities

of a circular economy project applied to the University and Manchester (Mendoza et al. (2019).

Hong Kong suspension of face-to-face classes in mid Nov 2019, the course had to be

delivered online include exclusively, a combination of asynchronous and synchronous modes of

instruction were adapted. Asynchronous online instruction involves the dissemination and

storage od readings and session materials on the LMS with the addition of annotated Power Point

and with the tutor providing voice-over narrative. Session activities and discussion tasks were

changed to individual tasks with additional instruction and notes provided for clarity.

Synchronous online teaching involves one-hour long real-time live lessons delivered through

Video Conferencing Software (VCS). In Japan resumed the face-to-face classes way back in
January only to be suspended again in February (2020) due to the rapid spread of COVID 19

(Zhao 2020).
The COVID-19 pandemic has become a public health emergency. The large-scale, highly

infectious disease with a high lethality rate has put enormous strain on people all over the world.

Schools in 172 countries were closed, affecting approximately 1.5 billion students. The sudden outbreak

of the pandemic caused significant changes in the mode of learning, communication between teachers

and students, and interaction between students and their peers. The pandemic presented an undeniably

difficult situation for students who were used to offline learning.

Zeng et al. states (2021) states that, the dual pressure of the sudden outbreak of the pandemic

and the changes brought about in the learning mode is likely to have a negative impact on students'

academic activities and psychological health. Carrying out academic activities is a crucial task for

graduate students. The goal of postgraduate training encourages them to pursue specialized

knowledge and engage in scientific research. Institutions performing large-scale evaluations have

outlined the significant indicators of academic performance. For example, the Times Higher

Education World University Rankings (2021) reported the following indicators of academic

performance: research and paper citations. There is evidence that academic performance is

significantly associated with academic competency and study strategies. Therefore, academic

performance in the present study refers to academic behavior (ie, data collection and thesis

writing).
