Problem 2. The impeller of an axial flow pump is 1.35m in diameter while the boss is
0.6m in diameter.
a. Find the most suitable speed to provide a head of 2.6m. The velocity of flow
through the impeller is 4.5m/s and the specific speed of the pump 350rpm.
b. Find also the vane angle at inlet at the exterior tips and near the boss. Assume no
whirl at inlet.
Solution
a) We have:
Discharge = Area x velocity of flow
Specific speed of pump define:
Therefore,
c) We have
The reaction is
So,
At impeller exit
Mach number at impeller outlet
d) Impeller efficiency is
We have
Therefore,
Problem 4. An axial flow compressor delivers a total pressure ratio of 6, the total head
pressure and temperature at entry being 0.418 MPa and 300oK respectively and the
overall isentropic efficiency being 86%. The degree of reaction is 50% and all stages
contribute an equal amount of work. At a particular stage the blade speed at the mean
height is 205 m/s and the axial velocity 175 m/s. if the absolute air angle entering the
rotor at this stage is 15o and the work done factor is 0.91, determine:
a. The rotor air inlet angle
b. The number of stages required
c. The static temperature of the air at entry to the rotor and
d. The rotor inlet relative Mach number
Solution
a) Absolute air angle entering the rotor at this stage : α1=15o => α1’ = 75o
Rotor air inlet : β1
The reaction ratio: R=0.5 we have:
Have
And
c) We have:
Static temperature
And,
Mach number
Problem 5. The bore and stroke of a single acting reciprocating pump are 315mm and
455mm respectively. The static suction head is 4.7m. The suction pipe is 120mm in
diameter and 8.5m long.
a. If the separation head is 2.6m determine the maximum speed of operation of
the pump. Atmospheric head is 10.3m of water.
b. Calculate the discharge at this speed and the maximum friction head on the
suction side. F=0.02
c. What will be pressure at starting, middle and end of stroke
Solution
