Doctor Who CCG Variant

Version 1.2 (updated April 2006)

By Chris Heffernan
Original - March 2004

One of the complaints I've heard from Doctor Who fans about this game (we won't touch on the
complaints by non-Doctor Who fans) is that there doesn't seem to be any real reason why things
are happening. Other than time-travel, the game is not true to the TV show. As it stands, the
Doctor can team up with the Daleks to use a Cyber Bomb against Ace who is working for the
Master while hanging out with Robomen.

At first I was considering completely revamping the game with brand new rules using the old
cards. I decided to simply rework two ideas to try and stay a little more faithful to the TV show.
The areas I'm adjusting for this variant are deck construction and episode resolution. Using this
variant, the Doctor will never work directly with most villains and vice versa (some villains also
won't work with some other villains), and certain villains now have an easier time solving
episodes. This won't solve all the problems of strange team-ups, but it will solve the major ones
(ie: Ace can still team-up with Robomen, but the Doctor will never work with Daleks).

Deck Construction

Basically you can build a deck revolving around the Doctor, or a villain (or neither if you are so
inclined). You must follow the guide below when constructing a deck:

Creature in deck Can't have the following creatures in deck

Any Doctor Black Guardian, any Dalek, Davros, any Cyberman, The Master,
The Rani, The Meddling Monk, Rutans, Skarasen, Peking
Homunculus, Daemons, Kronos, Fendahleen, Yeti, Robomen,
Ogron, Autons, The Destroyer, Green Death, Nestene, The Great
Intelligence, any Sontaran, Nimon
The Master, The any Doctor, any assistant (except Turlough), White Guardian,
Rani & The Romana, Tharils, Policemen, any U.N.I.T. personnel, Marine
Meddling Monk Space Corps

Daleks & Davros any Doctor, any assistant (except Turlough), White Guardian,
Romana, Tharils, any U.N.I.T. personnel, Marine Space Corps,
any Cybermen, The Master, The Rani, The Meddling Monk,
Mechanoids, any Draconian
Cybermen any Doctor, any assistant (except Turlough), White Guardian,
Romana, Tharils, any U.N.I.T. personnel, Marine Space Corps,
any Daleks, The Master, The Rani, The Meddling Monk, Raston
Warrior Robot, any Draconian
Solving Episodes

Some non-Doctor cards now have a slightly easier time solving episodes. The following
creatures subtract an additional 1 from any episode solve number when they are sided to solve
the episode:

Davros
Emperor Dalek
Cyberleader
Cybercontroller
The Brigadier
The Master
The Rani
The Meddling Monk
Winnifred Bambera

This bonus is cumulative, so if The Master and The Rani were sided to solve an episode, they
would be adding a total of 4 towards solving that episode (1 Support each, +1 each for the new
rule).

I'm hoping this variant will help in creating theme decks. If you use this variant, it should be
easier to create theme decks such as:

The Doctor and companions

The Master, The Rani, and/or The Meddling Monk
The Daleks
The Cybermen
U.N.I.T.

I've only very briefly fooled around with the idea and would love some feedback.
