Table 2 JDM A20 — Applicable Standards, Material Grades, and Descriptions ............................... 7
1 Scope
1.1 JDM A20 applies to hot-rolled carbon steel bars, plates, shapes, sheets, and strips of structural
quality with nominal minimum yield strength 250 MPa.
1.2 JDM A20 specifies chemical composition, mechanical properties, metallurgical properties, and
general requirements. JDM A20 also defines a number of supplementary requirements that may be
specified on part drawings or purchase orders.
1.3 JDM A20 steels are specified in terms of appropriate international, national, or industry standards,
with some additional requirements according to clause 5.
3 Methods of Specification
When structural steel is purchased to JDM A20, the steel shall conform to the requirements of the
applicable John Deere standards (see clause 5).
3.2.2.1 When structural steel is purchased to international, national, or industry standards, the steel shall
conform to the requirements of the applicable standards for the specified grade and type of steel.
3.2.2.2 When the part drawing specifies structural steel according to JDM A20 and the steel is
purchased to an international, national, or industry standard, JDM A20 shall also be specified on the
purchase order. This is necessary to ensure that the full material requirements of the part are satisfied.

4 Applicable Standards and Material Grades for JDM A20 Steel
4.1 Applicable material grades and descriptions according to ISO, ASTM, EN, CSA, IS, and JIS
standards are shown in Table 2. Steel specified by JDM A20 grade designation shall conform to the
requirements of one or more of the applicable standards and material grades listed in Table 2, as well as
to the requirements of clause 5 of JDM A20.
Note 1 In the ASTM system for designating standards, the letter "M" follows the numerical designation to indicate
that SI units of measurement apply. When both inch-pound and SI units are used as separate requirements within
the same standard, ASTM dual-designates the standard using the format "Axxxx/AxxxxM". Both inch-pound and SI
metric versions of ASTM standards are listed separately in Table 2, even when there is a single dual-designated
standard. This is necessary to ensure that the correct standard for dimensional tolerances is used. Applicable dual-
designated ASTM standards are shown in clause 7.4.
Note 2 EN standards use both numeric and symbolic steel grade designation systems, which may be used
interchangeably. Both types of EN steel grade designations are included in Table 2.
4.2 The inclusion of a material grade in Table 2 indicates that the grade meets the base requirements
of the JDM A20, not that it is equivalent in all respects to other grades that also meet the base
requirements of JDM A20.
4.3 To qualify as fully meeting JDM A20, a grade shown in Table 2 shall also satisfy all applicable
requirements according to clause 5.
4.4 Steel produced to other standards and material grades may be substituted for the grades specified
in Table 2 if the supplier provides satisfactory evidence of material equivalency and receives approval
from the Deere design control unit in accordance with established unit quality deviation processes.
JDM A1 specifies general requirements for JDM A20 steel supplied as hot-rolled bars, plates, and
shapes.
JDM A4 specifies general requirements for JDM A20 steel supplied as hot-rolled sheet and strip.
Unless otherwise specified, the standard provisions of the latest relevant ISO, ASTM, EN, or other
applicable standards shall apply for all points not covered by these JDM standards.
Note 3 The definitions of sheet, strip, plate, and bar products vary from standard to standard. The standard to
which material is purchased determines the classification.

JDM A20 APPROVED FOR SUPPLIER DISTRIBUTION
Chemical composition of JDM A20 steel shall conform to the requirements of the applicable standards
and steel grades referenced in Table 2.
Residual alloy content of JDM A20 steel bars and shapes shall meet a minimum of quality level QL2
according to JDM A0.
For some manufacturing processes, limiting silicon content can be advantageous. If necessary, restricted
silicon content shall be specified on the part drawing or by a John Deere unit standard.
Metallurgical properties of JDM A20 steel shall conform to the requirements of the applicable standards
and steel grades referenced in Table 2 unless more restrictive requirements are specified in JDM A20, in
which case the requirements of JDM A20 apply.
JDM A20 steel shall be melted to fine grain steel-making practices. Grain size shall be 5 or finer
according to ASTM E112.
Internal soundness and nonmetallic inclusions JDM A20 steel in bars and shapes shall meet a minimum
of quality level QL2 according to JDM A0.

5.6 Supplementary Requirements
5.6.1 General
Supplementary requirements apply only when specified on the part drawing or purchase order. The
following supplementary requirements may be specified.
5.6.2.1 Charpy V-notch impact tests shall be conducted in accordance with ASTM A673/A673M or
technically equivalent test method.
5.6.2.2 The part drawing or purchase order shall specify the test specimen, the test temperature, and
the absorbed energy requirements.
Example 2 S1 — IMPACT RESISTANCE = 10 mm 10 mm, –30°C, 27 J
5.6.3.1 The following equation for carbon equivalent shall apply. All elements are expressed in percent
by mass.
%CE = %C + %Mn/6 +%(Cr+Mo+V)/5 + %(Ni+Cu)/15
5.6.3.2 The part drawing or purchase order shall specify the carbon equivalent.
Example 3 S2 — CARBON EQUIVALENT = 0.35% CE 0.45%
Sheets, plates, and strips supplied in bundles shall be from a single heat of steel.
Example 4 S3 — SINGLE HEAT BUNDLES
6 Quality Assurance
6.1 General
Suppliers shall conform to the requirements of JDS-G223.

JDM A20 APPROVED FOR SUPPLIER DISTRIBUTION
The supplier shall furnish a certificate of analysis for chemical composition, including residual alloy
content, for each shipment.
The supplier shall furnish a certificate of testing for the specified mechanical properties.
For other properties, individual Deere units may require additional certification for some or all shipments
to that unit. The decision whether to require such certification, as well as the details of any certification
program, are the responsibility of the purchasing Deere unit.
Samples shall be representative of the material. Sampling and test methods shall be consistent with
appropriate industry standards. The following shall apply unless otherwise agreed upon by both
purchaser and supplier. The testing laboratory shall report the test method used.
Chemical composition may be determined by using any recognized analytical method. Referee methods
shall conform to appropriate ISO or ASTM methods. Samples for chemical composition should be
obtained by methods consistent with ISO 14284.
6.4.3.1 Internal soundness shall be evaluated according to JDQ 89. Samples for evaluation of internal
soundness should be taken at six locations selected as being representative of the material.
6.4.3.2 Each supplier shall test shipments of QL2 material until that supplier has demonstrated
statistical process capability in meeting the internal soundness requirements and there is explicit
agreement between purchaser and supplier to stop testing.
6.4.4.1 Nonmetallic inclusions shall be evaluated according to ASTM E45, Method A, except that, for
each inclusion type and thickness, the worst field rating on any test specimen (not the average of worst
field ratings on individual test specimens) shall be used to determine the final rating. Samples for
evaluation of nonmetallic inclusions shall be taken at six locations selected as being representative of the
material.
6.4.4.2 Each supplier shall test shipments of QL2 material until that supplier has demonstrated
statistical process capability in meeting the nonmetallic inclusion requirements and there is explicit
agreement between purchaser and supplier to stop testing.

6.5 Retests
6.5.1 Supplier Retests
If test results obtained by the supplier fail to meet specification requirements on a maximum of two of the
six required specimens for evaluation of internal soundness and nonmetallic inclusions, then two
additional samples for each discrepant specimen shall be tested. If any of these additional samples fails
to meet specification requirements, the material is unacceptable.
If test results obtained by the purchaser fail to meet specification requirements on the first sample taken
for evaluation of internal soundness and nonmetallic inclusions, then five additional samples shall be
tested. If any of these additional samples fails to meet specification requirements, the material may be
rejected.
