Anticorrosive
Dimensionally stable parts
Zinc - iron yellow-chromed

1. Scope of application and objective

Blank, dimensionally stable parts exposed to atmospheric conditions due to their place of
installation are provided with a zinc-iron coating.

This factory standard applies for dimensionally stable parts, such as axles or parts
featuring internal and external threads, for example.

3. Requirements / Description

3.1 Notes on design

3.1.1 General
For the chemical pre-treatment, and in particular with zinc - iron coating, a hydrogen
embrittlement of the material must be anticipated for high-strength steels. Parts made from
materials featuring a strength durability of Rm > 1000 N/mm2 may not undergo zinc - iron
coating.

Open gaps and joints are to be avoided. Corrosives could leak from these cavities
following the galvanising process and impair the galvanising.

− Weld seams must be properly sealed, thus the weld seams must be implemented
around all welded parts completely (see fig. 1).
− Wherever recesses are evident, the recesses must either be welded shut or the recess
manipulated so that the extremities of the recess can be joined (see fig. 1).

For parts featuring a weight of > 0.5 kg, locating bores must be added for insertion of the
parts, or mounting threads for suspension of the parts, wherever insertion or suspension
possibilities are not already featured due to the part’s geometric form.

Special validations for rotating parts:

a) Weight of part > 0.5 kg to 5 kg, length < 300 mm

Insertion bore centrally on the face side with ∅ 7 mm, depth 20 mm, deburred

b) Weight of part > 5 kg to 10 kg, length < 300 mm

Insertion bore centrally on the face side with ∅ 10 mm, depth 30 mm, deburred

c) Weight of part >10 kg or length > 300 mm

Insertion bore centrally on the face side with thread complying with DIN 332-2 form
DS, max. M16

For all other parts, the specification on the respective drawing applies.

Partial galvanising is to be avoided due to the high manufacturing costs. If this can not be
avoided because of the design, the procedural method must be clarified with the person
applying the coating.

Parts indicating surface damage may not be welded.

The following specification is to be applied to the design drawings or factory standards:

Anticorrosive in accordance with LN 252-3

Fe / ZnFe 8 - 12 C

3.1.2 Surface

3.1.2.1 Unprocessed parts

If it is possible for the parts which are to be coated to remain unprocessed, they must
remain metallically blank.

3.1.2.2 Mechanically processed parts

If the surface being coated is mechanically processed, the roughness depth and allowance
must be taken into consideration for fitting (see Table 1).

Table 1:

Before coating After coating

Roughness depth in Ra > 1.0 µm approx. initial roughness depth
0.8 µm ≈ 1.0 µm
< 0.4 µm ≈ 0.6 µm
The following applies for fitting prior to nitriding, independent of dimension:
Inside: + 20 µm; Outside: - 20 µm.

3.2 Notes for the workshop

The workpiece may not exhibit any cracks, foreign inclusions and laminar imperfections.

Cold weldings (incomplete fusion), open pores, piping porosity and residues of weld spray
films (containing silicone) may not occur.

Grease, colour markings, welding slag, weld spatter and scales must be completely
removed.

Rust, oil and welding smoke do not need to be removed as they are removed during pre-
treatment in the pickling solution at the galvanising plant.

3.3 Notes for surface treatment

3.3.1 Surface composition

If it is possible for the surface composition to remain unprocessed in accordance with the
drawing/factory standard sheet, point 5 of DIN 50961 applies, the surface being protected
must be eligible for the corrosion protection process. Ascertainment of this point, and if
necessary, verification by way of consultation with LBC, is the responsibility of the person
applying the coating.

If the surface being coated is to be mechanically processed, Table 1 applies.
