The cylinder head is held tight on the liner by eight tie rods anchored in the crankcase and going
through the jacket (see Maintenance manual - chapter 3).
Cooling water coming from cylinder and running into the water bridge enters cylinder head through
the lower part.
This water is running into exhaust valves and is exhausted on the upper part in a manifold which
connects together cylinder heads of cylinder Bank.

This water is running into exhaust valves and is exhausted on the upper part in a manifold which
connects together cylinder heads of cylinder Bank.

7
Each cylinder head is equipped with:
- two inlet valves,
- two exhaust valves,
- an inlet and exhaust valve gear system driven by rocker arms,
- an injector,
- an indicator cock,
- a starting valve,
- a plug,
- a valve gear casing.

Each cylinder head is equipped with :
- two inlet valves,
- two exhaust valves,
- an inlet and exhaust valve gear system driven by rocker arms,
- an injector,
- an indicator cock,
- a starting valve (*) or a plug,
- a safety valve or a plug,
a valve gear casing.

(*) on cylinder bank B, the other bank is equipped with a plug (in case of 10-V cylinders, both banks
are equipped with a starting valve),

9
The combustion chamber is sealed thanks to cylinder head gasket between liner and cylinder head.

Inlet and exhaust valve angles for PC2-5 engine:
Valve => 120°25 +/-10’
Seat angle => 120° +0 /-30’

Inlet and exhaust valve angles for PC2-6 engine:

Valve => 120°25’ +/-10’
Seat angle => 119°40’ +0 /-30’

13
The inlet valve is « stellite » coated.

Inlet valve seat is machined directly on the cylinder head.

Each inlet valve slides inside two guides, fitted in a body which is held on the cylinder head by two
studs with nuts and also by a rocker arm bracket tie rod with nut.
Two springs close the valve. They rest on the one side on the valve body and, on the other side, on
a plate held in position on the valve stem by two half-shells.
A tappet transmits the rocker arm thrust.
Sealing between the valve body and the cylinder head is provided by an O-ring.

14
Valves rest on cylinder head against an insert seat (102).

Each inlet valve slides inside a tight guide (5) fitted into the cylinder head and in a bush (2).
Sealing is provided by three rings (3) fitted into the ring-holders (4).

Two springs (6) and (7) close the valve. They rest on the one side on the tight guide (5) and a ring
(10) and on the other side, on a plate (8) held in position on the valve stem (1) by two half-shells
(9).

A tappet transmits the rocker arm thrust.

15
The exhaust valve and the valve seat are « stellite » coated.

Each exhaust valve slides inside two guides fitted into an assembly seat body secured on the
cylinder head by three tie rods with spacers and nuts.
The bodies for right and for left valves are cooled by water coming from the cylinder head.
Two bushes fitted with O-rings provide water circulation between cylinder head and valve body.
Two springs close the valve. They rest on the one side on the valve casing and on the other side,
on the plate supporting the rotating device.
The assembly is held in position on the valve stem by two half-shells and a lock bush.
Sealing between the valve bodies and the cylinder head is provided by an O-ring.

16
Each exhaust valve slides inside a tight guide (6) or (113) and in a bush (3) fitted into a body (1) or
(2) secured on the cylinder head by three tie rods (27) with spacers (47) and nuts (46).
Adequate sealing is provided by three rings (4).

The body (1) or (2) depending on the fitting of valve on left-hand or right-hand side is cooled by
water coming from the cylinder head.

Two bushes (14) fitted with O-rings (18) provide water circulation between cylinder head and valve
body.
Sealing between the valve body and the cylinder head is provided by an O-ring (19).

The two valve return-springs (8) and (9) rest on the tight guide and on a rotating device.

The assembly is held in position on the valve stem by two half-shells (11).

17
When starting, the valve lets compressed air flow into the cylinder during the power-stroke cycle.
Its opening is pneumatically controlled by a compressed air intake above the control piston (see
chapter 7).
The piston is tightened on the valve by a castellated nut locked in rotation by a pin.
A spring returns the valve to closed position.
The valve body is tightened on the cylinder head by means of two tie rods and nuts.

Quick opening air starting valve (optional)

The lower part of this valve is identical with that of the standard starting valve.
The upper part is made up of an additional piston supplied with air through its hollow stem and
providing a multiplied effort, which accelerates the valve opening.

18
In case of overpressure occurring in the cylinder, the valve opens and gases are expelled outside
through a hole drilled in the cylinder head.

This valve comprises a valve (3) equipped with a needle put on the body seat (1) through a spring
(4).
The latter leans, in its lower part, on an adjusting washer (6) which rests on a thrust bush (5) ; in
the spring's upper part, the support is provided by the upper flange (2).

The valve body (1) is maintained on a tapered seat of the cylinder head through studs (39) and nuts
(30).

Sealing between the valve body and the cylinder head is provided by an O-ring (12).

19
The cock enables :
- the adjustment of a combustion pressure indicator,
- the pressure relief of cylinder during slow rotation of the engine.
The cock is fastened at the lower part of the cylinder head on the inlet right hand side. It can be
heat insulated.

20
21
The rocker-arm gear is made up of a short pin holding a swivelling forked lever which controls the
exhaust valves and a long pin holding both rocker arms of the inlet valves.
A branch pipe, at the end of the distribution main pipe, feeds oil to the various links through holes
drilled in the bracket of the pins and rocker arms.

22
The rocker arm bracket is tightened on the cylinder head by four tie rods.
Two pins hold it in position on the cylinder head.
The valve stems are controlled by the folded tappet screws locked by the nuts.
The rocker arms are controlled by push rods which transmit them the tappet motions controlled by
the camshafts.
The push rods are located inside the protection tubes crossing the valve gear casing.

23
It includes (see also next slide):
at the lower part, a casing (1) nested into the cylinder head, positioned by a pin and tightened by
five studs (21) and nuts (29). The O-ring (15) located in a cylinder head groove provides for the
sealing,

at the upper part, a cover (2) tightened by three screws (6) and including a circular inspection tape
(105), held in position by two "quarter turn" lockers.
