DIGITAL FACULTY FOR A DIGITAL

FUTURE Hollie Henderson, and Megan Todd

By: Kayla Kemfort, Carly Flowers,

What does it mean to be a

Digital Faculty?
A digital faculty is one that is digitally fluent, not just

digitally literate. "Fluency involves using technologies

readily and strategically to learn, to work, and to play,

and the infusion of technology in teaching and

learning to improve outcomes for all students”

(Spencer, 2020).
Examples of interactive technology sites

that can be used by a digital faculty:

Steps to creating a digitally fluent

classroom with a digital faculty:

1. Assign tech tools to students and have them present the tool to the class

and teacher. Students and teachers can discover new technology

together and it helps to improve educator digital fluency as well as

student digital fluency.

2. Begin with tech tools that are of personal interest. Educators should

begin with only a few new tools that they believe are engaging and will
be of personal interest to them. Don’t overwhelm yourself with several

new tools at once. After practice with the first few tools, educators can

then build upon their list of tech tools.

3. Do not expect to fully understand the tech tool right away. Educators

should give themselves time and opportunity to play around and

experiment with new tech tools.

4. Participate in technology professional development courses. Many school

systems now offer technology courses for their teachers to learn about

current classroom technology. If your school does not provide this, ask

your administration to provide more training in classroom technology.

5. Research and keep up to date with technology trends. Educators should

be aware of the latest trends within technology to keep up with this

digital age.
6. Create your own tech support group. Educators can make a Facebook

page, a GroupMe, or a Remind group with fellow educators to support

one another and share new technology. (Sartor, 2020)

Why is being a digital

faculty important?
Living in an ever evolving and changing

technological world, it is important that

faculty members keep up with digital

technologies that are out there. “If faculty

desires to connect with their students in

digital context, then they must make a

concerted effort to catch up to them in

experiencing the digital world." (Parasar,

2017) Teachers who do not keep up with
