The activity consists of:
You must complete the following steps in order to develop and improve your listening and
speaking skills.
Step 1 – Practice session with the tutor
In the forum, you will find a video with a native speaker who talks and gives his point of
view about social media.
Step 2 – Recording a video
Once the practice session has been presented you will “interact” in a video call with the
native speaker.

Do you think we compare ourselves to others on social media? Yes/no, give reasons to
support your opinion.
R/ Social networks can be considered as an invention that came into our lives to unite those who
are far away and separate those who are close. Related to the problem question, I dare to affirm
that since its inception humanity has always been comparing itself to each other, perhaps that is
why fashion and social strata and other factors that classify us as a person were invented, social
networks influence because they gave a greater increase in the comparison between us but now
in a virtual way, we no longer only compare ourselves with people who are in our environment
but we also compare ourselves with people we do not know, entering into a process of
acculturation.

2. Do you think that the information shown on social networks inspires our actions?
Yes/no, give reasons to support your opinion.
R/. Yes, because we as people have allowed social networks to culture us, for example today we
can see indigenous cultures wearing the attire of people who live in cities or many times we want
to dress or behave like celebrities.
The emergence of social networks has created endless possibilities for exchanging information.
The creation of virtual communities allows users to feel like members of a group in which they
are recognized and whose ties are strengthened, since group norms and social pressure mean that
the most influential users are accepted as opinion leaders, for what their opinions penetrate deep
into the community and go viral immediately.

3. Can social networks affect our mental health? Yes/no, give reasons to support your
opinion.
R/. The successive comparison we make of our lives with what is shown to us on other users'
networks can cause feelings similar to depression when we see something we want and cannot
get.
The fact of having an infinity of information at hand all the time can present failures in people's
concentration, since the activities they carry out on a daily basis such as studying, working or
talking with their relatives are constantly interrupted by the use of the cell phone .
Research reveals that even having a cell phone nearby while performing any task can decrease
concentration without the need to touch the device. This is because the brain is constantly
evaluating the possibilities and, having so many, the head is inclined towards what it can or
wants to do and not what it should, which is the task in front of it.
People share a portion of life on social networks, their trips, food, new things, friends and family.
Which is not bad, but the proliferation of content in certain profiles with greater popularity
creates a tension in the brain that works as a self-claim for not having the life that is shown in the
publications of others and for not having the approval (translated in likes) from your
environment.
