What’s In

Hello learners! Installing

nstalling electrical metallic tubing is interesting, isn’t it?

People needs electrical energy to live conveniently and are investing money
to acquire a good source of electricity. This is one of the reasons why electrical
installation is a good source of income for electrical working students.

If you can still recall your lessons in your Electrical Installation and
Maintenance Learner’s Material: Module 1, what topic was the most exciting one?

What’s New

That’s right! Installing electricity is an interesting activity.

Describe the picture below?

You have noticed a metallic tubes, right? Electrical Installation involves

installing electrical metallic tubing performed by a well trained staff called an
electrical
ical technician or an electrician.

So, today we will learn all about installing electrical metallic tubing. Are you
ready?

What Is It

As an electrical installation and maintenance student or a future electrician

someday; why do you need to learn installing of electrical metallic tubing?

Aside from knowing installation of electrical metallic tubing it is also important

to an electrician to perform bending of metallic tubing needed to for a specific project
or job.

To give clients professional

professional and responsible service, you must also learn the
safety procedure in installing electrical metallic tubing. This is extremely relevant to
your future success as an electrician.

Types of Metallic Tubing

1. Flexible Metallic Tubing- a wiring installation commonly used for external

motor terminal connection. It is manufactured in rolled in the form of coil.
 Made from convex to concave metal strip in a form of coil with the
length ranging from 50 to 200 feet.
 Turns are carefully handled to avoid deformity, can be secure with
straps or clamps with a distance of 136cm or closer.
 This wiring method is not allowed under the following conditions:
1. In wet locations
2. In hoist way
3. In storage battery room
4. In hazardous location
5. When exposed to oil, gasoline or materials which affects
rubber.
 This type of conduit ranges from ½ to 1½ inches electrical trade size.

2. Electrical Metallic Tubing- installation of wire designed to lessen or eliminate fire

hazard and electrical accident.

 Used for exposed and concealed work at the same condition with rigid
metal conduit.Enamel protected EMT should not be used on the
following conditions:
1. Subject to mechanical during or after construction
2. Cinder fill
3. Hazardous location
4. Exposure to corrosive vapor and fumes

14
 EMT can be used in wet location provided the water is prevented from
entering the conduit. Fitting, strap, and support must be approved for
the purpose.
 The code requires a maximum of four adapter bends (3600) for every
one run EMT.
 Standard length of EMT is 10ft. or 3m with a diameter from ½ inch to 6
inches or 150mm.

3. Rigid Metallic Conduit (RMC) / Rigid Steel Conduit (RSC)- serves the same
purpose with the Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT).

 Standard length of RMC / RSC is 10ft. or 3m with a diameter from ½ ,

¾ up to 6 inches.
 Conduit protected by enamel is permitted only in indoor occupancies
not subjected to severe corrosive influences.
 Metal to metal contact must be avoided in installing RMC / RSC to
prevent galvanic reaction.

15
 Fitting with corrosion protection are permitted to be installed in
concrete, direct earth burial , or in areas subjected to corrosive
influences.
 Hack saw and pipe cutter is used for cutting conduit.
 Round file or reamer is used to clean burrs to prevent damage of wire
insulator when it is inserted to a conduit.

What’s More

What’s up! Now that you know the types of metallic tubing and fittings used
in electrical installation let us now proceed to the types of bend used in installing
metallic tubing.

Please read further…

Types of Bend

19
1. Elbow - a 90 degree angle bend fitting
commonly used to make quarter bend.

2. Offset bend - less than 90 degree bend, it is

used when the conduit is entering an electrical
box or crosses an obstacle.

3. Round saddle bend - used when the

conduit run across a circular object like pipes.

4. Square saddle bend - is a combination of

two offset bends used when the conduit run
across a rectangular obstacle.

Hi learners! Are you still there? There you are, stay tuned for an exercise.
This time let us practice through hands on exercise, performing bending electrical
metallic tubing (elbow bend).

For this activity your task is to make elbow bend of an electrical metallic
tubing. Follow the procedure below.

Procedures:

1. Prepare the necessary materials, tools and equipment.

2. Wear the appropriate PPE.
3. Using a try square draw a right angle bend on the floor.
4. Draw an arc near the corner of the right angle.
5. Mark of the center of the location of the bend.

6. Insert the EMT into the conduit bender / hickey where the center of the
bend is to be made.

7. Gradually bend the EMT to form a 900 bend. Checked the desired
shape by placing the conduit on the layout on step 3.
8. Remove the right angled bent EMT to the bender.
9. Observe good house keeping.
