Question 1:
What are the inputs, processing, and outputs of
UPS’s package tracking system?
Question 1:
Inputs: Package information, customer signature, pickup, delivery, time-
card data, weather conditions, traffic information, and current stop
location for best route consideration, delivery trucks speed billing and
customer clearance documentation.

Processing: The data are transmitted to a central computer and stored


for retrieval. Data are also reorganized so that they can be tracked by
customer account, date, driver, and other criteria.

Outputs: Pickup and delivery times, location while en route, package


recipient and multiple reports (such as all packages for a specific
account or a specific driver , a drivers route ,shipping information , rate
calculations and package tracking).

What technologies are used by UPS? How are these
technologies related to UPS’s business strategy?

ORION: Dispatchers at this center download the label data and use special
routing software

Delivery Information Acquisition Device (DIAD): A handheld computer which


can access wireless network. Drivers once he/she log in daily routes
downloaded onto their device. The DIAD automatically captures customers
signatures according pickup and delivery information. Package tracking process
is then transmitted to UPS main server and storage on it. From there information
can be accessed to the worldwide. To provide proof of delivery to customers or
to respond customer questions. Process takes only 60 seconds and new
information throughout DIAD to be available on the UPS’s site.

Cisco Systems: enable customers to embed UPS functions, such as tracking


and cost calculations, into their own websites so that they can track shipments
without visiting the UPS site.
Question 2:
Automated package tracking system: UPS can monitor and even reroute
packages throughout the delivery process.

Bar code devices: scan shipping information on the package label and feed data
about the progress of the package into the central computer.
Mobile apps and a mobile website: Anyone with a package to ship can access
the UPS website to track packages, check delivery routes, calculate shipping
rates, determine time in transit, print labels, and schedule a pickup.
UPS Quantum View Manage technology: The staff can view and monitor
outbound packages and immediately respond to customer questions about
order status.
Question 2:
→ These technologies are related to UPS’s business strategy because they improve
efficiency and make parcel service’s cheaper. Drivers can know more detailed
information (for example, geographic location of entire fleet) from handheld PCs
that captures customer signatures automatically.

→ These technologies also help the strategy to increase flexibility in business.


These technologies help the business to integrate tracking, rating, address
validation and other stuffs to be done easily in a real time.

What strategic business objectives do UPS’s
information systems address?

Operational excellence: investing in advanced IT to maintain leadership in
small-package delivery services despite stiff competition from FedEx and the
U.S. Postal System
New products, services, and business models: launched a new Web-based
Post Sales Order Management System (OMS) that manages global service
orders and inventory for critical parts fulfillment.
Customer and supplier intimacy: download and print their own labels using
special software provided by UPS or by accessing the UPS website.
Improved decision making: special software creates the most efficient delivery
route for each driver that considers traffic, weather conditions, and the location
of each stop
Competitive advantage: enhance its decades of expertise managing its own
global delivery network to manage logistics and supply chain activities

What would happen if UPS’s information systems
were not available?
Question 4:
Customer/Sender: If the information system was not available, the
customer would decrease faster. Senders want to select a good one with a
high proof and information system that is simple to understand.

Global delivery: It will be difficult for other countries to receive their


packages. They will be unaware of the status of their packages. It implies
that they have no information about their packages.

Saving cost: It may be beneficial to the company to save money. They don't
have enough employees or machines.

Time loosing: These systems always provide information about their


packages. It is one of the advantages for the company, but if they do not
have anything, the company may lose time.
