SEMINAR

ON
STRENGTH ANALYSIS OF
GLULAM TIMBER

PRESENTED BY: ABC (070/BIE/110)

Objectives 2

General Objective:

• To analyze and compare the strength of various Glulam Timbers

Specific Objective:
• To compare the strength of softwood glulam, hardwood glulam and
hybrid glulam
• Analysis of stiffness and bending capacity
• Study the methods for increasing stiffness
• Study the methods for increasing bending capacity

2
Introduction to Engineered Wood Products 3
Composite wood manufactured by binding of various elements
Designed to meet application-specific performance requirements

Types of Engineered Wood Products

 Strand Based  Fiber Based

Orient strand board (OSB) Wood Plastic Composite (WPC)
Parallel strand lumber (PSL) Fiber Cement Board
 Veneer Based  Particle Based
Plywood Particle Board
Laminated veneer Lumber (LVL MDF & HDF
 Lumber Based
Glued Laminated Timbers (GLULAM)
Edge Glued Timbers (EGT)
Cross Laminated Timbers (CLT)

3
Glue Laminated Timber (GLULAM) 4
 Small strips of wood are glued together to form a larger and thicker
element
 More stable and high bearing capacity

Conclusion 16

 Hybrid GLULAM Timber with 30% Hardwood by volume was

found to have highest bending capacity
 GLULAM with 30% hardwood had lesser stiffness that 100%
hardwood
 Stiffness can be increased by the use of finger joints,
eliminating natural variability, increased control during
seasoning, etc.
 Use of Lipping lumber of veneer layer on sides could increase
the bending capacity
