Design of Steel Connection

11.Design a lap joint to connect two plates each of width 120 mm, if the thickness of one plate
is 10 mm and the other is 08 mm. The joint has to transfer a working load of 120 kN. The
plates are of fe 410 grade. Use bearing type of bolts and draw connection details. Using M18
bolts of grade 4.6.
12.Determine bolt value 20mm diameter bolt of 4.6 grade to connect two angles 100 x 100 x
12mm back to back on opposite side of gusset plate of 12 mm thick. Also determine no. of
bolts required for the joint when it carries direct factored load of 350 KN. Draw neat sketch
of designed connection. Used grade of Plate 410
13.Design the lap joint for plates 100x10mm and 80x10mm thick connected to transmit 120kN
factored load using single row of 18mm dia bolts of 4.6 grade and plates of 415 grades.
14.Determine bolt value 12mm diameter bolt of 4.6 grade to connect single angles 100 x 100 x
10mm Connected to one side of gusset plate of 12 mm thick. Also determine no. of bolts
required for the joint when it carries direct factored load of 175KN. Draw neat sketch of
designed connection. Used grade of Plate 410
15.Determine bolt value of 16mm diameter bolt of 4.6 grade to connect two angles 90 × 60 ×
6mm back to back on opposite side of gusset plate of 8 mm thickness. Also determine number
of bolts required if it carries a direct factored load of 110 kN. Take pitch = 50 mm and edge
distance = 40 mm. Draw neat sketch of designed.
16. 100mm x 10mm and 100mm x 8mm plats are connected by using 16mm diameters bolt of
grade 4.6 and grade & steel plate in 410N/mm2 provide single row of bolts, find strength of
joint. Find no of bolts required to form joint Assume kb=0.49
17.ISA 80 x 50 x 8 nun is to be connected to 10mm thick gusset plate using 6mm fillet weld.
The angle is subjected to 150 kN tensile load, assume shop welding. Provide welds at
extremities of the longer legs. For ISA 80 x 50 x 8 take Cxx = 27.3mm
18.Design a suitable fillet weld to connect a tie bar 80mm x8mm to 10mm thick gusset plate.
Design the joint for full strength of the tie and assume welding on all three side as shown in
fig. Take fy=250MPa, γmo= 1.1 and fu= 410MPa.
19.A plate 150 x 10mm is connected by 8mm fillet weld .Find lap required to be provided for
longitudinal weld only draw neat sketch showing lap length. Take permissible stress in weld
material as 108 N/mm2 Take fy=250MPa, γmo= 1.1 and fu= 410MPa.

Design of Shear Reinforcement and Bond
1. What are the types of shear failure in reinforced concrete beams?
2. State reason for providing shear reinforcement in the beam state its two forms with neat
figure.
3. Calculate the development length, if 20mm diameter bar of grade Fe 415 is used for
resisting compression, take τ bd = 1.2 N/mm2 for plain bar in tension.
4. Design shear reinforcement in the form and two legged vertical stirrups of 6mm for a
beam of 6m span having service load of 20 kN/m. Beam is 300 x 450 mm (effective) in
size. The reinforcement consists of 6 bars of 20mm in diameter. Use M20 concrete and
Fe 415 steel. Use following table.

Design of Slab
1. State the classification of Slab
2. State the Purpose of main steel and distribution steel.
3. Design a one-way slab with following data span = 5.0 m, Live load= 4.5 kN/m2, Floor
finish = 1 kN/m2. Concrete M 20 and steel Fe 415, M.F. = 1.4. Sketch c/s of slab showing
reinforcement details.
4. The effective dimensions of a slab panel are 4 m x 7 m. it carries super imposed loads of
4 kN / sqm. Design a suitable slab using. M20 and Fe 415 steel. Take M.F. = 1.25, αx =
0.113 and αy =0.037. Find total depth D factored BM and reinforcement details using
suitable bars. Sketch the c/s of slab along shorter span showing reinforcement details.
5. Design a cantilever chajja with following data: Span = 1.50 m, width = 2.0 m, L.L.=
kN/m2. Floor finish = 0.5 kN/m2, support lintel = 230 x 300 mm concrete M 20, Fe 415
steel, sketch the c/s of chajja. Showing steel details.
6. A 3 m wide passage, supported on 230 mm thick side walls, carries a superimposed load
of 3.75 kN/m2 including floor finish. Design the suitable slab using M20 concrete and
Fe 415 steel. Use 8 # and 6 ǿ bars. Take MF = 1.4. Apply the checks for maximum area
of reinforcement, minimum area of reinforcement and spacing. Do not apply checks for
shear and bond. Sketch the cross-section. Use effective cover – 20 mm.
7. Design a two-way slab for panel of effective size 5.6 m x 4 m simply supported on all
four sides. It carries a live load of 3.5 kN/m2 and a floor finish of 1 kN/m2. Use M20
concrete, Fe 500 steel, MF of 1.2, 10 # bars and effective cover of 20 mm. Take αx =
0.099 and αy = 0.051. Do not apply check for shear and bond. Draw the cross section
along shorter span.
8. Draw the cross-section of a dog-legged staircase showing reinforcement details.
9. A cantilever slab of effective span 1.0 m carries a superimposed load of 1.5 kN/m2
including floor finish. Calculate the depth and area of reinforcement. Use M20 concrete
and mild steel. Take MF = 1.55.
10. Design a cantilever slab of 2 m span carrying super imposed load of 3 kN/m2 including
floor finish. Adopt M20 and Fe 415 steel. Sketch the c/s of slab showing all details. (No
check required). Take end bearing as 230 mm.
11. Design a roof slab for a room having inner dimensions as 3.0 X 4.5m. The slab is simply
supported on four sides of walls of 230 mm thick and corners are not held down. The live
load is 2 kN/m2. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel. Take M.F. of 1.4. Sketch the cross
section of slab along shorter span showing all details. (No check required).

12. The passage 3 m wide is supported on 230 mm thick side walls. It carries super imposed
loads of 4 kN/sq. m including floor finish. Design a one-way slab using M 20 concrete
and Fe 415 steel. Take M.F. = 1.4. Sketch c/s of slab along shorter span showing
reinforcement details. Check not required.
13. Design a slab for a hall 9 x 3.5 m for following data - live load = 2 kN/m2, floor finish =
1 kN/m2, width of support = 230 mm, M.F. = 1.5. Use M15 concrete & mild steel. Draw
sketch of reinforcement details. Check for shear & development length need not to be
taken.
14. Design a slab for a hall size of 4 m x 5.5 musing M 20 concrete & Fe 415 steel. Take live
load = 2 kN/m2 floor finish = 0.5 kN/m2, MF = 1.4, Lx = 0.114, xy = 0.035, check for
shear & deflection need not to be taken. Draw reinforcement sketch.
15. Design a cantilever chajja for a span of 2 m carrying LL = 2.5 kN/m2 & FF = 0.5 kN/m2.
Use M20 concrete & Fe 415 steel. Take MF = 1.6. Check for shear & deflection &
development length need not to be taken. Draw reinforcement detail sketch.

Design of Axially loaded short column and Footing

9. Calculate working load carrying capacity of column 230 x 230 mm. provided with 4 bars
of 16 mm diameter. Use M 20 concrete and Fe 415 steel
10. Design a RC column footing with following data: Size of column – 400mm x 400 mm

M20 and steel Fe 415 is used. Calculate depth of footing from B.M. Criteria. No shear
check is required.
15. Design a RC Column square footing for a column of size 300 x 300 mm. Load on column
is 1200 kN. Take safe bearing capacity of soil = 200 kN/m2. Use M20 concrete and Fe415
Steel. Calculate depth from BM criteria only. Also Draw the c/s of Footing showing
reinforcement details.
16. Design a square column to carry an axial load of 1000 kN using ms lateral ties. Use M25
concrete and Fe415 steel. Take unsupported length of column = 3.0 m. Use 1% steel and
apply check for minimum eccentricity and for short column.
17. Design a RC column footing for a column of size 400 x 400 mm. Take SBC of soil = 200
kN/m2 & load on column is 1500 kN. Use M20 concrete & Fe415 Steel. Calculate dept
of footing using bending moment criteria only.
18. Calculate working load carrying capacity of column 300 x 300mm provided with 4 - 20
mm Ø bars. M20 concrete & Fe415 steel is used.
19. Calculate the area of longitudinal steel for short circular column of diameter 400 mm

20. Design an isolated square footing for a square reinforced concrete column section 250
mm size to carry an axial factored load 700 kN. The S.B.C. of the soil is 150 kN/m2.
Calculate the depth and steel required of footing from bending moment consideration
only. Show reinforcement details. Use M20 & Fe415.
21. A square column size 400 X 400 mm carries axial load of 1000 kN. Determine size of
square footing for column. If the SBC of soil is 200 kN/m2, calculate depth of footing
for B.M. criteria. Use M25 and Fe 415 steel.
