ACTIVITY 1

Good day everyone! I am Mam Jere-online your teacher for this morning. Today we will be discussing all
about the Particle Nature of Matter. But before we start the activity let me first give you a small trivia –
did you know that water is the only one considered as solid liquid and gas?

Solid water—ice is frozen water. When water freezes, its molecules move farther apart, making ice less
dense than water

Liquid water is wet and fluid. This is the form of water with which we are most familiar. We use liquid
water in many ways, including washing and drinking.

Water as a gas—vapor is always present in the air around us. You cannot see it. When you boil water,
the water changes from a liquid to a gas or water vapor. As some of the water vapor cools, we see it as a
small cloud called steam.

Water IS VERY IMPORTANT in our life that why we need to give it more importance. This little trivia is
connected to our lesson for today which is all about the Particle Nature of matter.

Ahhaaaaaa! Let go back to you Jere, can you explain the directions of the activity?

Are you ready? Ill give you 5 seconds to think and answer. Lets start!

1. Air inside the ball – is it a matter?

2. Flour – is it a matter?
3. Human Heart – is it a matter?
4. Light – is it a matter?
5. Leaves – is it a matter?
6. Smoke – is it a matter?
7. Sound – is it a matter?
8. Toy – is it a matter?
9. Heat – is it a matter?

Now let’s proceed to the discussion on why some are matter and others are non-matter.

DISCUSSION

STATES OF MATTER

We are now going to proceed with the states of matter. Let us first discuss

In solids, the particles are very close together and arranged in an orderly manner because the
particles are held together by very strong attractive forces. This explains why solids have definite shape
and volume. It is difficult to compress the particles. (after this show the diagram)

In liquids, the particles are arranged in a disorderly manner, and the bonds between them are weaker
than those in solids. This explains why liquids has no definite shape. The weak attraction between the
particles of liquid allows the particles to roll over each other. This makes the particles of liquids to move
freely. Liquids have a fixed volume, but the rolling motion of the particles allows them to take up the
shape of their container. Liquids cannot be compressed into smaller spaces. (after this show the
diagram)

In gases, the particles have much energy than those in solids or liquids. The attraction between the
particles in a gas is so weak that they can move freely in all directions. They spread out and take up any
space that is available, so gases have no definite shape or volume. Because of the large spaces between
particles, gases can be compressed. (after this show the diagram)

Did you learn something? I guess this discussion will expand you learning about matter.
