History … English first arrived in Australia because of the first fleet, but what is the first fleet ?

It was a fleet of ships that brought the first European and Africa setters to Australia
In 1787 the fleet under the command of capitain Arthur Phillip, with over 1400 people they left
England and took a journey of 250 days to new south wales, Australia
Where a penal colony would become the first european settlment in australia
But why were convicts sent to Australia?
During the 17, 18, 19 th centuries, deportation was a common sentence for crimes where the death
sentence wasn´t applicable. From the early 1600´s until 1776, most deported convicts were sent to
british colonies in north america
With the outbreak of the American revolutionary war transportation to north america was halted
With Britain´s prisons becoming increasingly over crowded, the British government sought a new
alternative to less severe crimes
Australia was seen as a potencial alternative, and the first fleet set off to establish the new penal
colony in New South Wales
Shortly after the first fleet in 1850, was found gold in Australia and the Australian gold rush began
and with that a huge wave of emmigration began too, where about 2 percent of the UK emmigrated to
the recent colonies
This brought emmigrants and linguistic influences from all around the world
An example of that was the intrduction of American English vocabulary

Australian English diversed from British, Irish and Scottish english after the first fleet and it arosed
from a dialectal melting pot
Australian English is a dialect and his accent is most similar to accents from the South-East of Britain,
particularly those of Cockney. As with most dialects of English, it is distinguished primarily by its
vowel phonology.

There is some influence from Hiberno-English, but perhaps not as much as might be expected given
that many Australians are of Irish descent. One influence is the pronunciation of the name of the letter
"H" as "haitch" this is thought to be the influence of Irish Catholic priests and nuns.
Other Irish influence include the non-standard plural of "you" as "youse" /jʉːz/, sometimes used
informally in Australia, and the expression "good on you" or "good onya". Another Irish influence is
use of the word 'me' replacing 'my', such as in the phrase Where's me hat? This usage is generally
restricted to informal situations.

72 percent of australian speak english as their first language, 18.5 million, and 5 million as a second
language
Because english is the official and main language in Australia it is used in education, business and
administration
