Luplupa, 1986. A vernacular Kalinga house c.

1915, owned by Lumnay, with cogon grass roof

and walls of split-and-plaited bamboo was torn down in 1999.

Kalinga indigenous octagonal house 'finaryon' make use of indigenous materials in

construction. Its four posts are made from timber, the wallboard make use of plain wood while
the roof is made from rattan, runo or cogon grass. The house has 2 floors. The first floor may be
covered or not. The first floor serves as there stock area of crops especially rice. Also, it is where
they pound rice because it is shaded on that part of the house. Some natives put their pigs and
chickens especially during rainy days. The second floor serves as their living room as well as
their bedroom. The wooden ladder can be pulled out or put as it is. At night the natives pull the
ladder up to avoid wild animals from entering their house. Long ago, this serves as their
protection from the Spaniards to not easily enter the house. Another good thing is, during rainy
days, you cannot hear the loud and noisy drops of rain. Also, during the hot season, the fresh
wind easily enters the house that is why the people do not need to go out the house to get
fresh and cold air.
