Why do

we need
Rules in
literacy?
Why ?

❏ The use of rules in literacy help us get a better

understanding of the reading or writing. This
will help the reader understand the writing
without getting confused.
❏ Rules gives us the format/idea into how we
should write and read. If everyone learns the
same rules we will be able to communicate
with each other.
❏ When you follow the rules your writing will
most likely be effective and help you get
your message across more clearly to the
reader.
Spelling rules

★ Homophones- words that sound alike but

spelled different
★ Compound words- two or more words
come together and make one word
★ Suffixes- group of letters added to the
end of the main word
Grammar rules

★ Write in complete sentences

★ Use commas/punctuations correctly
★ Learn how to use conjunctions

Tense rules

★ Past tense- used when talking about something

that already happened. Ex- I ate the apple
★ Present tense- used when talking about
something that is happening now. Ex- The apple
tastes good.
★ Future tense- used when something will
happen in the future. Ex- I will eat that apple
soon.
One example how rules have
helped others

❏ Miranda Love has created a website in which

she talks about how learning phonic rules
makes it easier for people to learn how to
read and write. She mentions people's own
personal experience in which they were
struggling to read and write no one
understood them till they learned the phonics
method rules. This helped them learn how to
understand literacy and other people where
now able to understand theirs.
