As a scholar in general Ethiopian studies, working on Ethiopic literature, manu-
scripts, and sources, I unfortunately cannot claim any specific competence for
technical liturgical questions. This condition risks being detrimental to my short
contribution and for this I would like to apologize in advance.

marked, and with reason, the field of Ethiopian studies and influ-
enced colleagues not familiar with Ethiopic — Guidi with Franz Xa-
ver von Funk, Hammerschmidt with Georg Kretschmar, as we will
see shortly — thus establishing a chain of authorities and influences.
In several respects, the history of the research and of the hypotheses
which were formulated on this baptismal ritual are of exemplary
character for the way in which the Ethiopic evidence is usually con-
sidered, and therefore I will give some details on the history of the
research, not without introducing the present state of the art on
Ethiopic baptismal texts in general. This is again to say that besides
some reflections on the history of research and some apparent fea-
tures which stem from admittedly important new discoveries, a real
and thorough analysis and a new evaluation of this document in
terms of its liturgical contents is still to be done and cannot be given
in my contribution.
*
Let us first take a look at the state of the art concerning the study of
Ethiopic liturgy and baptism in particular. In theory there is a com-
prehensive bibliography published in 2008 by Habtemichael-Kidane.3
This book — although slightly affected by some confessional concerns
— is certainly useful, particularly for the recent history of Ethiopian
and Eritrean liturgy and the extensive publications of rituals which
have recently appeared, and also for the contribution of one of the
best experts of Ethiopian liturgical practice, namely Father Emmanuel
Fritsch.4 Yet, aside from errors that are not unusual also in contribu-
tions of this kind, this is not an annotated bibliography and there is
no detailed description of the single entries.5 The subject index (pp.
113-120) is not arranged clearly, so that subjects are difficult to find.
3
Habtemichael-Kidane 2008.
4
Habtemichael-Kidane 2008 lists 940 entries (pp. 33-95). Most importantly, it also
includes a tentatively full list of all the Ethiopian and Eritrean publications to date,
as well as a list of the authors (pp. 107-112) and of the most important and ancient
manuscripts of liturgical character (pp. 97-103). For the latter, see Fritsch 2016a,
2016b, 2019; see also Fritsch and Habtemichael Kidane 2020.
5
The subject index (pp. 113-120) is not arranged clearly, so that subjects are diffi-
cult to find. Some of the entries related to baptism are beyond the scope of scho-
larly literature or are simply not publications, see for example no. 266, Emmanuel
Fritsch, The Ritual of Baptism of the Ethiopian Church including the Sacraments
of Initiation of Baptism, Chrism, Eucharist, with Synopsis of Sources (Arba-Minch:
n.p., 1997, ‘pro manuscripto’, 35 pp. as appears from an online source: http://
www.liturgia.it/addaicongress/interventi/fritsch.pdf); while others, for example no.
271, Fritsch 2009, only apply to questions of reformation of modern liturgy.

This, at least, is what can be often read, yet the problem remains as to whether the
Modus was actually printed as an appendix (certainly not in 1548, as given by
Grébaut and Tisserant 1935, 16: 1548 is the year of the letter addressed to Pope
Paul III) or as an independent volume (this is stated in the same catalogue by
Grébaut and Tisserant 1935, contrary to what is given, for example, by the same
Grébaut 1927–1928, 105).
13
Grébaut 1927–1928: the editor provided on pp. 105–107 a short introduction, on
pp. 108–131 the edition of the baptismal ritual (ff. 122ra–143ra), and on pp. 132–
138 that of the ritual of confirmation (ff. 143ra–147vb), with the variant readings
from a preceding edition of a baptismal ritual by Chaîne 1913a, on pp. 139–152
for baptism, and on pp. 152–153 for confirmation; on pp. 155–184 he provided a
revised Latin translation for the baptism and on pp. 184–189 for the confirmation.

alt ist das von Scheidt aO. ohne zwingende Gründe als äthiopisches Eigengut be-
trachtete Gebet ›Benedictus sit Deus excelsus‹ (Grebaut aO. 126f bzw. 178f), das er
einer noch früheren ersten Entwicklungsstufe des Taufordos im Reich von Aksum
zurechnen will. Kirchengeschichtlich stehen diese Datierungsversuche am Rande
des Möglichen. Ihr hypothetischer Charakter ist jedoch unübersehbar. Hier auszu-

Jh. (V. Six, Äthiopische Hand-

9, ‘Urältestes in später Überlieferung’); also Audet 1958, 45, n. 1; on the right basis
of a Greek Vorlage for the Ethiopic Περὶ χαρισµάτων, Eshetu Abbate 1988 (in a
contribution neglected also by meticulous Steimer 1992) has drawn the erroneous
conclusion that the entirety of the Ethiopic texts published by Horner 1904 (i.e.
the Ethiopic Synodus Alexandrina, cf. below) were direct translations from the
Greek, as well as other untenable implications. A confused hypothesis on the posi-
tion of the Ethiopic version of the ‘“Apostolic Church Order” of Hippolytus’, with
reference to Johann Michael Wansleben (for whose role in this see Bausi 2015b,
214–220) is presented by Isaac 2012, 110–111, who ignores the recent research on

The reconstruction of the Ritual and of the Euchologion respectively as suggested
by Kretschmar must obviously be clearly distinguished from the Baptismal Ritual
and the Euchologion as they are attested by the Aksumite Collection.

The Baptismal Ritual from the Aksumite Collection 41
I have retold several times the circumstances that led to the discovery
in the church of ʿUrā Masqal, not far from ʿAddigrāt in northern
Tǝgrāy, of a manuscript codex that is probably the most ancient or
one of the most ancient non-biblical Ethiopic manuscripts.37 The term
Aksumite Collection that I proposed to use to indicate it is meant to
refer to a collection whose origin, in its Ethiopic version is presuma-
bly to be placed in the Aksumite period of Ethiopian history.38
This manuscript revealed surprise after surprise right from the
start. The virtual reconstruction of the way the leaves must have
been arranged originally, albeit with some of them missing, showed
that the 36 texts of the multiple-text manuscript were most probably
translated from Christian Greek into Ethiopic no later than the sixth
century and were eventually copied for several centuries. This sug-

37
This manuscript originally from ʿUrā Masqal, now kept in the neighbouring church
of ʿUrā Qirqos, was microfilmed first in 1999 by Jacques Mercier, who assigned it
to me for study. The manuscript was eventually digitised more times and finally re-
stored, on the basis of the detailed description and reconstruction of the original
sequence of the leaves I provided, by the Ethio-SPaRe project in 2012. The same
Ethio-SPaRe project assigned it the shelfmark UM-039. The manuscript was previ-
ously inventoried with the shelfmark C3-IV-73. For any further details, see the refe-
rences in the following footnote.

See Bausi 2015c; and an updated list of all related published and unpublished con-
tributions, in Bausi and Camplani 2016, 255–265; see also Bausi 2020. This ‘label’
was proposed according to the series of the Veronese collection, Antiochene Col-
lection, etc. as is commonly done for canonical collections, although these latter
sometimes refer to single manuscripts.

It obviously appears, on comparing the texts in the Sinodos and in
‘Ethiopic II’, that there has been a profound rearrangement, the rea-
soning behind which might have been partly at least a precise inten-
tion of restructuring the text, although mechanical damages in the
textual transmission might have also played a role in causing trans-
positions. A decisive role was also definitely played by the necessity
of considering the new material freshly translated from Arabic.
That there definitely was a common ancestor is undeniable and
can be demonstrated also by minor details: the number ‘20’ surfaces
in the Sinodos manuscripts, without any reason, at the end of a ru-
bric: 42 the Baptismal Ritual in ‘Ethiopic I’ is paired by a second
number, ‘21’, that is also obscure, but that has no parallel in the

This appendix contains a working edition of the Ethiopic text of the
Baptismal Ritual from the Aksumite Collection, along with a Ger-
man translation adapted from Hugo Duensing’s translation of the
Ethiopic baptismal ritual transmitted within the Traditio Apostolica
(Duensing 1946). In the inner margins of the edition, precise corre-
spondence with the editions of George Horner (‘H’ = Horner 1904)
and Hugo Duensing (‘D’ = Duensing 1946) is indicated, whereas re-
ference to the sections singled out and indicated with capital letters
by Antoine Salles (Salles 1958) are marked in the outer margins of
the translation. Further English annotations in the inner margin of
the translation summarise the content. Note that the symbol ‘|’
marks the change of column, recto/verso or leaf; the sign ‘||’ divi-
des sections that are not continuous in the corresponding text of the
Sinodos; the sign ‘|||’ marks the end of a paragraph in the manu-
script and indicates that the following text begins on a new line.
I must confess that it is only due to the heartfelt and insisting en-
couragement of Heinzgerd Brakmann, for reasons that I can well
understand, that I have accepted to provide this sort of pre-edition
of the Baptismal Ritual. The main reason for it is the possibility to
offer the entire structure of the Baptismal Ritual in a readable form
that is also accessible to those who are interested in its content. As I
have noted elsewhere, however, the problem is that the orthography,
palaeography, and most of all the language of the texts contained in
the manuscript of the Aksumite Collection are so peculiar that the
texts contained therein should not be published without providing at
least a good apparatus, where each form is justified and accepted in
its own right since it follows a peculiar language and orthography, or
is rejected since it is considered a scribal error. The good edition of
Hugo Duensing of the Baptismal Order from the Sinodos manu-
scripts has served, to some extent, the scope of contrasting the non-
standard orthography of the Aksumite Collection with a standardi-
zed corresponding text. But, as I say, to some extent: it appears in
fact that the text edited by Duensing, albeit on a limited manuscript
basis, is not exactly the same as the text in the Aksumite Collection,
for the reasons I have explained in this contribution. Therefore
there are passages where the Baptismal Order of the Aksumite Col-
lection has simply a different text from that edited by Duensing. In
