Delaney Dillard - Social Dilemma Documentary Discussion

Three Takeways
(1) There has been an increase in suicide and depression rates among teens/young adults
since the rise of social media. Educators MUST be aware of this and watch for the
signs.
(2) Fact check ALL information you find on the internet. Although I already knew to do
this, I think it’s important to teach your students to do the same. Everything you’re
doing online is being tracked and recorded. Things are purposely targeted at you - so
make sure you’re not falling for something false.
(3) Think before you post - and teach your students to do the same. Colleges, jobs, and
other opportunities are starting to look more and more at your social media as a
reflection of who you are and how you might fit into their organization. Once it’s out,
it’s out forever. Be careful.

Resource(s) I want to take with me

- I think that the three goals of tech companies (engagement, growth, and
advertisement) could be used in the classroom to keep students engaged. These goals
are things that are already being targeted towards them and that many of them are
already playing into, so why not use it for good?
