PRACTICAL
RESEARCH 2
EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION
TO THE BEHAVIOR OF SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL STUDENT IN SONHS

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social media refers to the methods by which people interact in

virtual networks and communities to create, share, and/or exchange
information and ideas. With social media, providing flexibility in
learning, stimulating innovative ideas, and increasing interpersonal
relationships among students, these tools can have negative effects on
students as they may distract their attention from the learning process,
reduce physical social interaction, and make them potentially
addictive. Students' excessive use of social media tools has changed
the shape and structure of their social behavior and academic
practices. With so many students using social media networking on a
daily basis, there is a strong need to investigate the extent to which
social media is having its impact on students. Thus, this research will
seek to have conclusions on the effects of social media addiction to
the behaviors of Senior High School students in SONHS.

Certainly, developing theories is at the heart of the scientific process,

which necessitates extensive research, evidence, and investigation. As
a result, in order to understand the effects of social media addiction on
the participants' behavior, the researcher applied a specific theory
known as the Uses and Gratification Theory, which explains why
people use social media. The theory of uses and gratifications was first
proposed by American sociologist Elihu Katz in 1959 in an article in
which he explained that communication research was on the near of
extinction because researchers were only concerned about the effects
of media on people. As a result, he proposed that researchers
concentrate on how media is used.
