LABORATORY DECONTAMINATION

PROCEDURE
You must: Rating Comments
1. Wash hands.
2. Wear appropriate and complete PPE.
For area decontamination: Wear nitrile gloves,
cover-all, dedicated laboratory shoes or rubber boots
(when mopping) and facial Protection (respirator
and goggles or face shield).
For equipment and supply decontamination: Nitrile
gloves, cover-all, dedicated lab shoes, facial
protection (respirator and goggles or face shield).
3. Prepare accordingly the decontaminating agent.
4. Label the prepared decontaminating agent with
agent name, concentration and date of preparation.
Decontamination Proper:
Laboratory work surfaces:
5. Apply decontaminating agent.
 For the floor, use a mop soaked in
decontaminating agent to apply it on the floor.
 For table, horizontal surfaces and anything you
came in contact with, soak an absorbent with the
agent and wipe to spread or gently pour it
directly on the surface and gently spread it.
 Start from the cleanest part towards the dirty
part to prevent the spread of contaminants.
6. Allow to stand for 10 minutes (contact time).
7. Mop or wipe dry with clean paper towel.
Laboratory equipment:
8. Check equipment manual for procedure in
decontamination and if 0.5% sodium hypochlorite
solution can be used as decontaminating agent.
9. Decontaminate surfaces exposed to infectious
material with 0.5% Sodium Hypochlorite solution.
10. Allow to stand for 10 minutes.
11. Rinse off hypochlorite residue by wiping with 70%
alcohol.
12. Wipe dry with clean paper towel.

13. Spray with 0.5% Sodium Hypochlorite solution and


allow to stand for 10 minutes.
14. Rinse off hypochlorite deposit with 70% alcohol.
15. Allow to dry.
PPEs:
16. If visibly soiled, soak in mild detergent to remove
excessive dirt and organic material then soak with
0.5% Sodium Hypochlorite solution and allow to
stand for 10 minutes.
17. If not, spray with 0.5% Sodium Hypochlorite
solution and allow to stand for 10 minutes.
18. Rinse off hypochlorite deposit with 70% alcohol.
19. Allow to dry.
20. Remove PPE.
21. Wash hands
