Meaning of open source software (OSS)

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available with a
license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change, and distribute the
software to anyone and for any purpose.Open-source software may be developed in a
collaborative public manner. According to scientists who studied it, open-source software is a
prominent example of open collaboration.

Meaning of Hardware
Open-source hardware (OSH), consists of physical artifacts of technology designed and offered
by the open design movement. Both free and open-source software (FOSS) as well as open-
source hardware is created by this open-source culture movement and applies a like concept to a
variety of components. It is sometimes, thus, referred to as FOSH (free and open-source
hardware).

Software
Computer software, or simply software, is a part of a computer system that consists of data or
computer instructions, in contrast to the physical hardware from which the system is built. In
computer science and software engineering, computer software is all information processed by
computer systems, programs and data.

2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM (OS)

2.1 Meaning of source OS
Open Source or open-source software is different from proprietary software. In Open
Source, the source code used in the software is available to anyone to examine, evaluate,

2
and adapt. Open source has had an important impact on the way many developers view
and create software.

2.1 Examples of open source OS

MOZILLA FIREFOX

Mozilla Firefox is a free and open-source web browser developed by the Mozilla
Foundation and its subsidiary the Mozilla Corporation. Firefox is available for
Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems, with its Firefox for Android
available for Android (formerly Firefox for mobile, it also ran on the discontinued
Firefox OS), and uses the Gecko layout engine to render web pages, which
implements current and anticipated web standards.

VLC MEDIA PLAYER

VLC media player (commonly known as VLC) is a free and open-source, portable
and cross-platform media player and streaming media server written by the
VideoLAN project. VLC is available for desktop operating systems and mobile
platforms, such as Windows 10 Mobile, Windows Phone, Android, Tizen, iPad,
iPhone, and iPod Touch. VLC is also available on App stores such as Apple's App
Store, Google Play store and Microsoft Windows Windows Store.

3.0 THE LASTEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE
3.1 Meaning of source application software
An application program (app or application for short) is a computer program designed to
perform a group of coordinated functions, tasks, or activities for the benefit of the user.
Examples of an application include a word processor, a spreadsheet, an accounting application, a
web browser, a media player, an aeronautical flight simulator, a console game or a photo editor.

3.1 Example of open source application software

Microsoft Office is an office suite of applications, servers, and services developed by Microsoft.
It was first announced by Bill Gates on 1 August 1988, at COMDEX in Las Vegas. Initially a
marketing term for a bundled set of applications, the first version of Office contained Microsoft
Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.

Ubuntu is a Debian-based Linux operating system for

personal computers, tablets and smartphones, where
Ubuntu Touch edition is used. It also runs network
servers. That is usually with the Ubuntu Server edition,
either on physical or virtual servers (such as on mainframes) or with containers, that is with
enterprise-class features. It runs on the most popular architectures, including server-class ARM-
based.

5.0 PERVASIVE COMPUTING

5.1 Meaning of pervasive computing

7
Pervasive computing, also called ubiquitous computing, is the growing trend of embedding
computational capability (generally in the form of microprocessors) into everyday objects to
make them effectively communicate and perform useful tasks in a way that minimizes the end
user's need to interact with computers as computers. Pervasive computing devices are network-
connected and constantly available.

5.2 Example of pervasive computing

SMARTWATCH

A smartwatch is a computerized wristwatch with functionality that goes beyond timekeeping.

While early models can perform basic tasks, such as calculations, translations, and game-playing,
2010s smartwatches are effectively wearable computers. Many run mobile apps, using a mobile
operating system. Some smartwatches function as portable media players, with FM radio and
playback of digital audio and video files via a Bluetooth or USB headset. Some models, also
called 'watch phones', feature full mobile phone capability, and can make or answer phone calls
or text messages.

8
AirPods are wireless Bluetooth earbuds made by Apple Inc. They feature new user interactions;
for example, removing an AirPod from one's ear causes playback to pause and vice versa, and
double tapping them either activates Siri, or plays or pauses playback.AirPods are compatible
with devices running iOS 10, and it automatically syncs through iCloud so that the user can
switch to devices running macOS Sierra or watchOS. They can also play audio from any device
that support Bluetooth 4.0 or higher, Android devices can use the double tap gesture to control
playback.

6.0 CONCLUSION
In this case we have presented the Adaptive Domain Environment for Operating Systems as a
solution for sharing hardware resources amongst multiple operating systems. We have presented
its architecture and suggested an implementation method for the ix86 using Linux as the base
OS. We have also defined areas of applicability. Although the implementation discussion has
centered around on the ix86 using Linux, the concepts presented may be extended to other
architectures and other base operating systems in order to provide the same capabilities.
