The story, ‘The Third Level’ clearly explores the science

fiction genre of ‘time travel’. Charley, the protagonist
wishes to be transported to the third level, the world of
Galesburg, Illinois, 1894, which is supposed to be a much
happier and quieter place to be in.

The story also dwells on the theme of escapism as a

psychological refuge from the grim realities of the present
day world along with a desire to stay with the past—a
desire that Charley’s wife Louisa does not contest. Sam
has also happily escaped, with no desire to return to his
old profession.

The story exposes the vulnerable side of the common

man. Surrounded by countless problems, we humans,
sometimes experience a craving for peace and serenity,
and look for possible escapes. This story is about time
intersection, an illusion, a kind of waking dream wish
fulfillment.
Q1.What does the third level refer to?
The third level is a medium of escape from the harsh realities of
modern life into the world of dreams and fancies.The modern
world is full of insecurity, fear, war and worry ,so man in his quest
to seek solace, peace, tranquility and security escapes into the
imaginary world ,to a place, where his aim is to seek the
realization of his dreams and unfulfilled wishes of his
subconscious mind.
Q2.Do you think that the third level was a medium of escape for
Charley? Why?
The fears, anxieties and insecurities of the modem world are
taking a toll on man’s mind. He feels helpless and frustrated and
seeks temporary refuse from the harsh realities of life. Charley too
was unable to cope up with his fast paced and stressful life so his
exit to the third level was undoubtedly a medium of escape for
him. It is nothing but a creation of Charley’s own mind. He wants
to escape from the modern world which is full of insecurity, fear,
worries and stress and looks for a medium of escape into the
world of dreams and fancies.
