Wire Ropes
The most important decision to make when selecting a wire rope is:
“Which type to choose – a rotation-resistant rope or a non-rotation-resistant
rope?”
This decision must be made very carefully. There is no room for error. Short rope life,
changes to the structure of the rope, abrupt and unexpected failure of the rope, etc.
could result from a wrong choice.
Rotation-resistant rope
Rotation-resistant ropes must be selected when B 55 (D1315 CZ)
· Lifting an unguided load on a single rope line
· Lifting an unguided load on several rope lines at a great lifting height
Rotation-resistant ropes can be used with or without a swivel.

Wire Ropes . 26 Selection . Type of Lay . Direction of Lay
Wire Ropes . 27
Rotation-resistant
A steel wire rope is considered as rotation-resistant, if the
rope under the influence of an unguided load does not, or
does barely, rotates around its longitudinal axis and exerts a
very low torque on the end connections. This characteristic
results from the fact that direction of lay of the rope core is
opposite to the direction of lay of the rope itself.
Thus, when a rotation-resistant rope is under load, the torque
generated by the core is equalized by the torque generated by
the outer strands.
Opposite torques of a
rotation-resistant rope
Non-twisting
A steel wire rope is considered as non-twisting, if, when the
rope is cut, the wires do not, or do barely, pop out of the rope
structure even without the rope being served, and the pulled
rope remains straight without resilience.

Responsibility
Within a transport chain dispatcher, vehicle owner
and driver each have a clearly defined responsibility,
including the safe loading and unloading as well as
the proper securing of the load against dislocation,
toppling over and losing.
Basic requirements
· Suitable vehicle (load capacity, loading area and anchor points)
· The weight and the configuration of the load must be known
· Vehicle driver expert in securing loads
Selection of suitable lashings (lashing straps, lashing chains) with respect to:
· Length of lashings
· Lashing capacity LC (e.g. LC 2500 daN)
· Number of lashings

Stresses induced by sudden lifting or falling of loads will overload
single legs or end fittings due to the strong forces of acceleration,
which in extreme cases will result in deformations or tearing of the leg.

6. Signal code
Before lifting a load slinger and crane operator should agree
a signal code for mutual understanding which also allows for
quickly carrying out the proper maneuver in emergencies.
1. Eccentric loads
Some loads are asymmetric and, therefore, will not balance
about their center point, thus requiring a more careful
handling.
The slinger should attach the sling gear as symmetrically as
possible around the estimated load center.
When the load is lifted carefully the load center of the load is
swinging, tilting over or shifting directly under the load hook
requiring the maintenance of safety distances to slinger,
staffers, machines and facilities. Since in such lifting operations so-
β metimes single legs have to bear the entire load, they may be over-
loaded. In case of doubt, select sling gear which can bear the entire
β
F load with one leg.
F 2. Compressive force
If the load is slung using a multi-leg sling gear under an stop
angle, horizontal compressive forces corresponding to
the inclination angle will occur in addition to the vertical
lifting forces. With insufficiently stable loads, e.g. truss girders,
prefabricated elements, or with extremely flat inclination angles
drag marks may develop at the attachment points or the load may

Chain Slings . Slinging Methods
Using the choker hitch, the sling gear is tightened with the
weight of the load ensuring that the load remains compact
and homogenous, that the sling gear will not slip, and that
the load remains stable.
For repeating lifting operations of the same kind multi-leg
chain slings are especially suitable in combination with a
1-leg ring-ended sling, because of their specifically good
handling, their optional use of choker hitches or open slinging
e.g. with cases, containers, etc.
This way only the 1-leg chain will wear out and has to be
replaced after some time.
Before lifting make sure that the load is free, not frozen up
or otherwise fastened.

a rotation-resistant rope
Non-twisting
A steel wire rope is considered as non-twisting, if, when the
rope is cut, the wires do not, or do barely, pop out of the rope
structure even without the rope being served, and the pulled
rope remains straight without resilience.
The smooth cylindrical surface of a compacted strand offers Interference of Contact between
significantly more resistance to abrasion and crushing forces round wire strands compacted strands
than the surface of a conventional strand.
Compacted ropes
A compacted rope is made of round wire strands or
compacted strands. After the stranding process its diameter
is reduced – compacted – by passing the rope through a die
or roller, or by swaging it.
The smooth surface of this type of rope is more resistant to
mechanical wear, e.g. with forest ropes.

Wire Ropes . Selection of Rope
This decision must be made very carefully. There is no room for error. Short rope
life, changes to the structure of the rope, abrupt and unexpected failure of the
rope, etc. could result from a wrong choice.

Mounting and start of operation Grove shape (groove profile)
Since grooves of the rope drums, rope rolls and compensating d pursuant to EN 12385 R = 0.525 x d

groove radius using a gauge before mounting the rope. A R

The lateral deflection of the wire rope from the bottom of the dW: Ropes with set ø in worn roove
grooves reduces the service life of the wire rope and therefore
must be kept as small as possible. For multiple threaded wire
ropes it is recommended that the fast running lines be designed
with a deflection as small as possible and the slowly
running lines with a larger lateral deflection. The permitted
maximum lateral deflection is 1:15 (4°), although a lateral
deflection of only 1° in the main working range may already
have an adverse impact on the service life of the wire rope. Rope running diagonally rolls
For rotation-resistant wire ropes it is recommended that the off to the bottom of the grooves
lateral deflection be designed so as not to exceed 1:40 (1.5°).
The lateral deflection of the wire rope has to be allowed for in
the technical design of the rope grooves.

Wire Ropes . Rope Handling
Transport
Transport the rope preferably on a reel.
Use suitable means for a safe transport of the reel.
Coiled rope sections are best transported by means of a
lifting belt.
Avoid contact of the rope with hard surfaces. The ropes
should be loaded by their own weight as little as possible.
Storage
Wherever possible, ropes should be stored on pallets in
places that are clean, dry, and protected against strong
solar radiation.
If ropes are stored outdoors for a short term, the plastic
foil covers should be checked for condensation and
the ingress of water at regular intervals.
Recoiling
Avoid reverse bends when recoiling.
Uncoiling
When uncoiling the rope, make sure that
no loops will form.
Installing
Make sure that the rope is not installed running over
edged parts, as this might damage the rope and could
cause undesired torques.

The pitch of the grooves is determined by measuring the
distance of 10 grooves and dividing the measuring result
again by 10. 10 grooves are measured in order to minimize α B

Shackles . Basic Information . acc. to EN 13889
Shackle combinations / connections directly via the bolt and the clamp. Force transmissions
The connections with other components usually cause a via the shackle eyes or legs (transverse pressure) are
surface or line load acting on the shackles. For lifting not permitted.
operations, point loads are also permitted. However, for
long-term applications, point loads should be avoided,
as this load will cause a substantially higher load on
and damage to the shackle surface due to the higher
surface pressure.
With point loads, the minimum diameter of the rounded
component to be lifted must be equal to or greater than
the diameter of the shackle clamp. With shackle combi-
nations, the maximum load will be determined by the
lowest WLL.
Enlarged contact surfaces (e.g. larger diameters or clevis)
may entail advantages in terms of the service life. Sharp
edges should be avoided at all times.
The larger contact surface of wide body shackles as
compared to standard shackles ensures a longer service
life and moreover is easy on the additional elements
such as ropes, chains, textiles, etc. as a result of the
larger deflection. Standard shackles may be combined
with special-purpose shackles, with the total working
load again being governed by the lowest WLL.
With the shackles, the load may be transmitted only
