1 INTRODUCTION

1 INTRODUCTION
The 1521FL type of optical line system is used for the transmission
of 2 Mbit/s data over single-mode or multi-mode fibres. Each
link consists of 2 line terminal units, one at each end of the cable.
With the 1521FL board type up to four 2 Mbit/s signals can be
transmitted on one link : this type of board is also referred to as
OSL4x2M.
The Common Network Controller Circuit (CNCC) supervises all
the line terminal units in one rack, together with the associated
remote line terminal units. The two terminal units building one
link are considered as one Network Element (NE). This description
treats the man-machine interface with these 1521FL equipments
via the CNCC by means of a Craft Terminal (CT).
The primary user interface to the CNCC is a craft terminal with its
associated software, see figure 1. The physical terminal can be
any (portable) IBM-compatible Personal Computer (PC) with an
RS 232 interface. For the local connection to an equipment the
used software is the Alcatel Network Element Craft Terminal
Application Software (NECTAS) package. Centralized
maintenance of several stations is possible if the craft terminal is
connected to the equipments via a Mediation Device (MD). In this
case the used software is the Alcatel Network Office Craft
Terminal Application Software (NOCTAS) package. The
NECTAS/NOCTAS software runs under MicroSoft (MS) Windows
( of Microsoft corporation).

Note This manual is written with NECTAS running under Windows 3.11,
if another Windows version is used the screens will be slightly
different. Refer to the documentation of your Windows version, to
learn about its specific features.

corresponding to the indication class (e.g. green for a normal
situation, red for an alarm). A detailed description is given on
figure 2.
The top status line gives the global equipment alarm synthesis, i.e.
the combined indication of all alarms on the connected
equipments. The central part of the screen shows individual status
lines for the different connected equipments. Remark that the

16 / 154 3AL 42260 AAAA TQAAA Ed. 05

showing of the status lines is controlled via the View menu, which
allows to show all the equipments or only the faulty equipments.
The first of the equipment status lines corresponds to the master
equipment or master network element, which is the common
network controller circuit CNCC. The other lines correspond to
slave equipments, which are connected to the CNCC. Each slave
equipment has its own status line.
When not all the equipments can be shown on the screen, the
scroll bar at the right can be used to view the hidden equipments.
In this case the status lines Equipment above and Equipment
below show a global synthesis of the alarms on the equipments,
which are currently not displayed and which are respectively
above and below the shown equipments. The number of hidden
equipments is shown at the left (0 in the example above).

the configuration, see chapter 6.
As soon as the administrative application is started, there is a
second MS Windows program box, which is positioned just
underneath the original one and which contains the application
name and menu bar. This is because this application is running
under MS Windows as a separate application. To show that this
application is currently active, the top line of this program box is
dark colored, while the previous program box becomes a light
color.
By clicking anywhere in a non-active area, that application can
be made the active one. A dark color indicates the application
and its menus are active, a light color indicates the application is
inactive.
The following menu selections are available now : Alcatel logo,
Operator and Help. They are explained in detail in the following
paragraphs. The File and Receive menu are greyed and thus not

application is not available. First reload the
configuration, see chapter 6.
As soon as the AS&C application is started, there is a second MS
Windows program box, which is positioned just underneath the
original one and which contains the application name and menu
bar. This is because this application is running under MS
Windows as a separate application. To show that this application
is currently active, the top line of this program box is dark colored,
while the previous program box becomes a light color.
By clicking anywhere in a non-active area, that application can
be made the active one. A dark color indicates the application
and its menus are active, a light color indicates the application is
inactive.

5.7.2 Equipment view

The equipment view at the lower side of the AS&C screen is shown
in the figure below.
On the upper left side the equipment type is indicated : 1521FL40
(OSL4X2M).
The rest of the equipment view field gives the system layout, with
the different system parts. By moving the cursor over these parts it
changes to a magnifying glass, indicating that can be zoomed in
on it. The obtained screen is as indicated in par. 5.7.3.

The small rectangle in the equipment parts indicates an alarm on

the corresponding part. In case of alarm a cross appears in this
box . The color of these rectangles depends upon the status
of the alarm detectors of the corresponding parts and the alarm
mask settings, see par. 5.7.3 :
" green : no alarm detected;
" red : alarm detected which is set up as urgent alarm;
" yellow : alarm detected which is set up as non-urgent alarm;
" magenta : alarm detected which is not set up as urgent or
non-urgent alarm.

5 ALARM, STATUS AND CONTROL APPLICATION (AS&C)

5.7.3 Zoom-in on equipment parts

This views give the most detailed information for the alarm
identification on the different parts of the line system :
" L TRIB x : local tributary x, see par. 5.7.4
" L LINE : local line, see par. 5.7.5
" R LINE : remote line, see par. 5.7.6
" R TRIB x : remote tributary x, see par. 5.7.7
Remark : x can take any value from 1 to 4, depending on the
tributary.
These screens give a graphical view of the concerned line system
parts : the different boxes on these drawings are related to
different alarm conditions or situations.
The color of these boxes depends upon the status of the alarm
detectors of the corresponding line system parts and the alarm
mask settings, see par. 6.4.7 to 6.4.10 :
" green : no alarm detected;
" red : alarm detected which is set up as urgent alarm;
" yellow : alarm detected which is set up as non-urgent alarm;
" magenta : alarm detected which is not set up as urgent or
non-urgent alarm.

As soon as the Equipment Configuration is started, there is a

second MS Windows program box, which is positioned just
underneath the original one and which contains the application
name and menu bar. This is because this application is running
under MS Windows as a separate application. To show that this
application is currently active, the top line of this program box is
dark colored, while the previous program box becomes a light
color.
The configuration will be automatically uploaded, then the Save
as... option of the File menu (see par. 6.2) is automatically
opened. Specify the name of the file where the uploaded
configuration must be saved under.
If a file is selected and the OK button is pressed, the uploaded
configuration will be saved under that name. After confirming, a

dialog box asks if the configuration file may be overwritten if it

already exists, confirm and the configuration file will be saved. If
Cancel is selected, the configuration will be named 'DEFCONF',
the uploaded configuration will not be saved.

7 PERFORMANCE MONITORING APPLICATION

(PM)
This application enables to check the performance monitoring
counters in the 1521FL line system. The error counting is based
on the CRC4 method. The performance monitoring is based on
criteria, as defined in Recommendation G.784 of the International
Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication standardization
sector (ITU-T).
The performance monitoring application is invoked by first
selecting the wanted slave equipment by clicking on its name and
then selecting the Application Choice menu, see par. 3.1 and the

8 MAINTENANCE MEMORY APPLICATION

The maintenance memory application (MM) allows the user to
view events, i.e. alarm appearances and disappearances, in
function of time. This feature is similar to the History option on
the Alarm, Status and Control application (see par. 5.3), but with
the History option all the alarm events are stored in the craft
terminal only when the craft terminal is connected. With the
maintenance memory application only the alarm events which are
set in the alarm masks are stored in the memory of the CNCC.
The maintenance memory application is invoked by first selecting
the wanted equipment by clicking on its name and then selecting
the Application Choice menu, see the figure below and par. 3.1.

Remark : if there is a loss of configuration alarm for the

equipment (indication LC on synthesis) the
maintenance memory application is not available. First
reload the configuration, see chapter 6.
As soon as the maintenance memory application is started, there
is a second MS Windows program box, which is positioned just
underneath the original one and which contains the application
name and menu bar. This is because this application is running
under MS Windows as a separate application. To show that this
application is currently active, the top line of this program box is
dark colored, while the previous program box becomes a light
color.
By clicking anywhere in a non-active area, that application can
be made the active one. A dark color indicates the application
and its menus are active, a light color indicates the application is
inactive.
The following menu selections are available now : Alcatel logo,
File, Receive, Clear and Help. They are explained in detail in the
following paragraphs.

9 PROCEDURES
The chapter 6 dealt with the various dialog screens used to
perform a configuration but did not detail how the specified
configuration data was to be applied to the equipment. This
section provides a summary of the procedures to execute in order
to actually configure or re-configure an equipment.
It is possible to completely define a configuration starting from the
ground up or to adapt an existing configuration to a new
situation.
The configuration application has four sub-routines :
" Upload an existing configuration, either stored on disk or
currently existing on the system;
" Modify and/or re-define an existing configuration;
" Compare (Audit) two existing configurations;
" Print a configuration.

9.5 Performance monitoring

Performance monitoring in the 1521FL is based upon CCITT
Recommendation G.784 and uses the CRC4 method for the error
detection. Figure 29 illustrates the links needed for performance
monitoring. Four quality parameters are used :
ER Errors
Total number of CRC errors.
ES Errored Seconds
Number of 1 second intervals within the available time,
containing one or more CRC errors.
SES Severely Errored Seconds
Number of 1 second intervals within the available time,
containing more than a certain number of CRC errors,
corresponds to a bit error ratio of at least 10-3.
UAS Unavailable Seconds
Unavailable time starts with the first second of a period
of 10 consecutive seconds with SES (a new period of
available time begins with the first second of a period
of 10 consecutive seconds without SES).
