The food coloring stayed in small blobs as the experiment began. It was able to be picked up by the q-
tips. When detergent was added, the food coloring dispersed dramatically. The colors meshed together
and spread out. The colors exploded.

Questions kids might ask next: what if you filled the entire surface of the plate with food coloring and
then added detergent? What happens if you add detergent to milk first and add the food coloring after?

Solid: Particles in it do not move, hard to the touch

Liquid: Particles in it do move a bit, flows and wet

Gas: Particles in it move a lot, all around us

Mystery liquid: White, slight green tint to it. Looks gross

If you touch it quickly, you cant really move though it. If you touch it slowly, you can get your fingers in
it. It is cold, and is like a playdough substance when you’re touching it

Non-newtonian liquids pour like a liquid but become hard like a solid when touch

1 person touches first – has to describe with words. Then later all can touch

For bag of water – I predict that the pencil will keep water from coming out of the bag. The pressure will
keep it from pouring out of the bag. Once the pencil is out, the water will come out

What happened: The hypothesis was correct, water did not come out of the bag until after the pencil
was removed

For the paper: I think that the paper will sway downwards when there is air blown on it

What happened: The paper moved up with the air being blown on top of it

For the two papers: I think they will move together and hit each other

What happened: The papers come together to form a v. The air forces the two papers to come together

Inquiry in the science classroom video:

“see what you notice – think in your head. What do you notice about the surroundings.”

Engaged by the scientifically oriented questions. Student backs up his observation with evidence of
animals hiding?

Asks for questions and observations

Describe a time when you noticed that there was a difference in temperature within the same space.

In my bedroom in my parent’s house, my bed is warmer than the opposite part of the room. My
bed is right next to the window and can get warmed up during the day by the sun. The a/c vent is also
on the opposite end of the room

1st discrepant event

Hypothesis: the paper will burn; the color will get darker. The material will dissolve

The paper burned and went as normal until most of the bag had dissolved. It then lifted upwards and
floated until the flame burned out and the bag became black as it floated back down. This was became
the air in the bag got hotter and hot air goes upwards.

2nd discrepant event

Hypothesis: I think the bottle will be impacted and the balloon will change shape length wise.

The balloon molded to fit the shape of the bottle in the bottle that had a tiny hole in it. This allowed air
to shoot out of the bottle so that the balloon could take up space. The bottle that did not have a hole in
it did not have enough space for the balloon to get blown up. Air does take up space as I previously
thought.

“Method of teaching about inquiry in the science classroom”

Constructivist approach

- Builds on prior knowledge

- Students construct understanding by connecting new info with existing knowledge

Scientific Inquiry is the ways in which scientists ask questions about the natural world, go about
investigating those questions, and then communicate those findings

Basic components:

1. Asking a question
2. Developing an investigation
3. Collecting data
4. Collecting data
5. Developing a conclusion with evidence
6. Communicating conclusion

Are you setting it up so that everything is the same? Or is there time for students to wonder about the
materials?

Discrepant events

1. Cheyenne

I think: the boat will float and the soap will bubble up. The toothpick will float too

What happened: The boat floated and the toothpick made the boat moved when the toothpick touched
it. The soap cut the water’s surface tension and made the boat move

2. Ashley

I think: The paper towel will not get wet because of the air pocket in the cup.

What happened: The paper towel did not get wet because of the pocket. When it was put in sideways,
the air pocket did not keep in full and the paper got wet.

3. Sierra
I think: the orange will sink in the cup of water and the water will go everywhere. The peeled orange will
sink

What happened: The orange floated, the peeled orange sank. The orange with the peel was heavier, but
had more buoyancy

4. Stacy

I think: The pepper will sink when it gets added to the plate. The soap will make the pepper sink

What happened: The pepper floated. The soap made the pepper move away from the soap

5. Jojo

She mixed together dish soap, vinegar, and water

I think: if she moves it the bubbles will blend and the drink will become foggy

What happened: A vortex was created

6. Erica

I think: The small beaker will sink. When oil is added the beaker will disappear

What happened: The small beaker sank. When oil was added the beaker disappeared

7. Grace

I think: The honey will sink and it is the thickest

What happened: The honey went to the bottom, and the dish soap stayed on top of it, mixing a little.
With time it mixes more. The balsamic vinegar separates to the top of the beaker and under the soap.
With water added it, the oil went on top of the water. The egg sank but did broke the honey a little.

8. Morgan

I think: the egg in 2 will sink and the egg in 1 will float

What happened: the egg in 2 sank and egg in 1 floated. 2 had salt and 1 did not have salt – salt increases
the surface space of an object and created a more buoyant egg.

9. Kara
I think: the rice will sink, but will float with the vinegar

What happened: The rice sank at first. But as vinegar was added, the rice is floating upwards because of
an endothermic reaction

10. Julia

I think: If the jar is over it, the candle will be extinguished. If water is poured in there the flame will
continue to burn

What happened: The light slowly extinguished. The water rose when the candle went out because of the
water having to overcompensate for the heat

11. Shayla

I think: the water is going to make the raisins sink. The bubbly water will make the raisins jump around.

What happened: The raisins did sink in the water. The raisins moved in the bubbly water and hopped
around a little from the carbonated bubbles

Facilitate responses

12. Kady

I think: The lemon will float in the water. The lime will sink

What happened: The lemon floated in the water. The lime sank. The skin on the outside of the lemon
was thicker so the lemon floated from the density

13. Alyssa

I think: The baking soda will melt upon touching the water and it will bubble as it does

What happened: The bag fizzed and popped. It expanded and exploded

14. Megan S.

I think: the food coloring will separate upon hitting the water

What happened: The food coloring became “fireworks in a jar” as food coloring dissolves in water but
not oil as oil is denser than water.

15. Eridazia

I think: the cans will separate and roll away. When the straws were there the cans would not move

What happened: The cans rolled away, and then came together when the straws were below them
because of the Bernoulli effect

16. Brookelyn

I think: diet will float and non-diet cans will sink in the room temperature water

What happened: The diet cans floated while the non-diet cans sank. The non-diet cans have real sugar
and are dense, so they sink. The diet cans artificial sugar and are less dense, and floated.

17. Karen

I think: The marble will fall out of the plate and spin away.

What happened: The marble spun out in a straight line because of inertia and the centrifugal force
18. Janessa

I think: She will not be able to walk through the paper

What happened: She made cuts in paper and was able to walk through it

19. Kayla

I think: the similar balls will fall at the same rate, no matter the ball

What happened: The balls fell at the same rate, but the heavier ball also fell at the same rate as the
small one

Waterdrop activity

Starting at the ocean, I evaporated into the air and went into a cloud. Then I precipitated into the ocean
and was stuck there. Then I stayed there again before evaporating into the air again, and then went into
an animal. From there, I would have ended up in the groundwater.

There could have been lakes, humans, pools, showers/human consumption, aquafer.

Discrepant event

20. Abi

I think: The raisins will sink in water and float in sprite

What happened: The raisins sank in water and bubbled up and floated in sprite

21. Paola

I think: The orange with the peel will float in the vinegar and will sink when it does not have the peel

What happened: The orange with the peel floated and it sank without the peel
22. Olivia V

I think: The water will sit on the penny and it can take 10 drops of water before it spills

What happened: The water sat on the penny and it took 16 drops to spill the first time and 21 drops the
second time

23. Esmerelda

I think: The baking soda and vinegar will create a gas when they combine and will inflate the balloon

What happened: The baking soda and vinegar made carbon dioxide

24. Megahn B

I think: the egg that spins more will be the hardboiled egg

What happened: The hardboiled egg spun faster

25. Oliwia Z

I think: The twix will sink, the milk way sank, the almond joy will float, the skickers will sink, the kitkat
will float

What happened: The twix floated, the milky way sank, the almond joy sank, the snickers sank, and the
kitkat floated

26. Bingyuan

I think: The marshmallow will go out the syringe when not blocked, and will stay in when blocked

What happened: The marshmallow stayed in the syringe and got squished when the exit was blocked.
The marshmallow expanded when there was no room for the air to get out

Observe Wonder Learn

The object is wrapped in tin foil. I wonder what is in the pellet. I I learned how owls eat moles,
It is about the length of my wonder how dry the pellet is. which I did not know before. I
pinky. It is light. Are all the pellets the same size saw how well owls can digest
and shape? Why did owls everything other than bones
evolve to eat their prey whole and fur. I also learned about the
instead of being able to tear food chain and how to adapt a
meat off of prey? lesson to work for advanced
students and students that
need extra assistance in class.
We found 2 skulls, one from a rodent and one from a mole
