QUESTION 1

There are 6 types of Supply Chain Model. These supply chain models focus on two
key areas, which is efficiency and responsiveness. The continuous flow, efficient and
fast chain model is the efficiency oriented supply chain model; while the agile,
flexible and customer configured model is the responsiveness oriented supply chain
model(Parikh, 2020). Although supermarkets and clinics both belong to the service
sector that gives a mix of product and service, the supply chain model can be very
different.

Supermarkets practise efficiency oriented supply chain models, the efficient chain
model. Supermarkets are operating in a highly competitive market targeting the same
group of customers. The pricing is important to attract the customer and get their
support. Supermarkets need to maintain an efficient supply chain to reduce cost and
waste, by maximising the utilisation of its assets and machinery, which can eventually
lower the pricing of its products.

Clinics practise responsiveness oriented supply chain models, the flexible model, as
the clinic is required to stock-pile critical resources and respond timely according to
the changes in environment. For example, during the movement control order(MCO),
the demand for clinical service is high but the workforce is low. Despite that, supply
for the needed medication and COVID test service can be provided seamlessly as the
business can react and adjust its production and productivity to accommodate the
environment changes in a timely basis. It helps to overcome the challenges caused by
external factors by switching its work focus.

QUESTION 3

Circular Economy is a model of production, consumption, waste management, which

involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing
materials and products as long as possible. (Circular Economy, 2021) The circular
economy concept got it spot light when YB Yeo Bee Yin, former minister of Energy,
Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC) introduced it
through “Malaysia Roadmap Towards Zero Single-Use Plastic by 2030” which
launched in October 2018 as a guideline for the nation to implement actions in
phases.(Malaysia’s Roadmap Towards Zero Single-Use Plastics 2018-2030 - Prime
Minister’s Office of Malaysia, 2019)

Circular Economy is then being enforced in Malaysia for sustainability and to reduce
the impact to the environment. Most importantly to reduce cost and waste to landfill.
This has brought impact especially to the food and beverage(F&B) industry.
Customers will prefer to spend for F&B that adhere sustainability in their business,
such as green purchasing in the supply chain. For example, when buying fresh
groceries such as vegetables and fruits, customers will prefer to buy at a shop that
does not overpackage the products.

To tackle this, businesses can practice green purchasing at the upstream level by
screening and working with environmentally conscious suppliers. It will eventually
reduce unnecessary packaging in the products, or replace it with biodegradable
materials if needed. At the downstream level, businesses that deal directly with end
users can train their employees to enhance green lifestyle in their day to day practices.
For example, Mcdonalds Malaysia does not provide straw unless requested by
customers.(Zhi, 2018)
