Course Reflection

Throughout the course, every step along the way was a learning experience. When I first

decided to work toward my master’s in library science, collection development wasn’t remotely

something I would have thought of, let alone as something so important. The entire collection

development course opened my eyes to many of the inner workings that goes into libraries and

their dedication to the public.

Each assignment served an important purpose to help prepare us for real applications.

Combining the creativity of making our own libraries as well as the struggle of taking into

account everything that could impact a library collection was both fun and challenging. My

favorite part was oddly enough learning the formatting and making the reports both accessible

and informative without being too bland.

While the hurricane, tropical storm, and a death in the family did severely impact my

ability to complete the assignments on time, I felt that the time given between assignments was a

bit short and I would have been scrambling to finish the assignments regardless. It wasn’t the

difficulty, but the tedious aspect of the reports that was most time consuming. Perhaps a separate

module put toward the top of the module page so students would have a constant reminder of the

level of detail and time needed to complete the project on time.

Overall, this was an invaluable course to take and was done so in a practical and

engaging fashion. I loved the feeling of gaining actual experience that I can apply later in my

career, as well as feeling prepared to be a librarian instead of having basic understandings of the

theory and philosophy.
