Laboratory No. 2
Volatility

Objectives:
 Identify following solutions that exhibit high Volatility
 Explain the mechanism of solutions Volatility

Materials/Equipment:
 Watch Glass
 Dropper
 Beaker
 Erlenmeyer Flask
 Steering Rod
 Timer
 Liquids(carboxylic acid, H2O, alcohol,C2)

Procedure:
1. Sterilize the following materials/ equipment
2. Place 1ml of the following liquids in a watch glass the observe
 Carboxylic Acid
 C2
 H2O
 Alcohol
3. Place 1ml of the following mix solution in inside the beaker and observe
 Carboxylic Acid and C2
 H20 and alcohol

Discussions:

Volatility in organic chemistry is described as a substance's tendency to evaporate or change from a

liquid to a vapor or gaseous state. Most liquids can become gases through the process of vaporization. Whether
or not a liquid will vaporize depends upon the chemical properties of the liquid but for this observation, high
volatility is being asked to identify in the solutions.  That is why it is observe during the observation, all
solutions were tested in just 60 seconds to determine what solution/s is exhibiting high volatility. Throughout
the observation some liquids or solution did not vaporize (means they did not exhibit high volatility), and some
did. The solutions that exhibit high volatility are Alcohol and the mixed Alcohol and H2O.

Alcohol and the mixture of Alcohol and H 2O exhibit high volatility because when alcohol is mixed with
water, H - bond formation takes place in between the two molecules (Water and Ethanol) which results in
decrease in the space between the two molecules and hence the volume decreases.

Conclusions:

All liquids evaporates but not all has a high volatility. Also, Hydrogen bonds contributed to volatility.
