Leadership

Course Handbook
2022/23
1. Introduction

This course is offered on a range of programmes within Edinburgh Business School. Regardless of study
discipline or career choices, leadership is an area of research that crosses time zones and business sectors. A
significantly debated and extensively studied area, this course covers both traditional and contemporary
theories and models and explores additional themes around gender, followership and ethics in leadership.
The course also provides a great deal of practical activities and discussion intended to support the
application of the theories and models in business as well as personal reflection on areas of strength and
development in a leadership context.

Leadership and its development is a very personal journey for all of us and this course uses established and
new theories and models to support your development and your self awareness of your own approaches and
preferences to leadership and how you might develop these in your career. The most important aspects of
this course is self reflection and honesty with yourself and a willingness to get involved and fully participate
in the course so that we can all learn and develop together.

2. Course Learning Objectives

On completion of this course you will be able to:

• Comprehend different theories of leadership, the history of leadership and current leadership theories.
• Synthesise theory and practical experience to make recommendations for good practice in team
environments.
• Value how ethics and morals affect leadership effectiveness within organisations.
• Explain how leadership styles and behaviour affects an organisations strategy.
• Evaluate how to be an effective leader across a diverse workforce.
• Apply leadership theories and analytical models to real life business situations through the use of case
studies to solve problems.

4. Course Structure
This course is delivered over 12 weeks. Each week consists of one lecture and where relevant supporting
workshops or discussion groups. In each weeks folder on Canvas you will find a range of online learning
materials and instructions to guide your progress through a number of tasks and activities to support your
learning and to prepare you for lectures and workshops/discussion groups. In total this course comprises 11
timetabled lectures each of one-hour duration (with the exception of week 1 when the lecture is 2hrs). These
lectures are live interactive sessions delivered at the same time each week over the semester. In addition, you
will have the opportunity to attend a series of 2 hour tutorials in weeks 2-12. to explore theories and concepts
in more detail.

All lectures and tutorials will be delivered on campus.

Consolidation Week: Week 6 is reserved as a reading week free of any timetabled sessions across all HWU
courses. You should use this time to catch up with online learning materials and wider reading. This will also
give you time to work on coursework.

5. Teaching Schedule
Lectures: In week 1 there will be a 2hr lecture intended to set the context, purpose and requirements of the
course and in the following weeks, there will be 10 timetabled lectures of one hour each. The date and time
of lectures will be different for each campus (see the detailed schedule in Section 9). All lectures are in person
and on campus and will not be routinely recorded. Attendance at all sessions is core to success in the course.

Workshops/Discussion Groups: On this course, there are a total of 10 2hr workshops and discussion groups
delivered as per the detailed schedule in Section. You should identify one of the group sessions which suits
3
your personal timetable and attend the same group in each week of the course. You will work as a class or in
break-out groups to explore the theories and concepts introduced in that week’s lecture or in materials you
will be directed to on Canvas. These sessions are core to understanding the theoretical content from the
lectures and applying it to the workplace and to your future career.

The timing and structure of the Lectures and Workshops will vary according to campus and local
requirements and so please ensure you view the timetable for the specific campus on which you are based.

6. Course Assessment

• Individual Annotated Bibliography (50 % of course mark)

This coursework will consist of a 2000 word (+/- 10%) annotated bibliography which will require you
to further explore and critique research on contemporary theories or themes in leadership and
identify areas you consider important to future workplaces.

Assessment marking criteria are available in the Assessment area of the Canvas course. Support to complete
the course assessment is provided during lectures, tutorials and in the assessment documentation uploaded
to Canvas. In addition to this, each assessment has a dedicated discussion group in canvas to support questions
and answers and dedicated time set aside in relevant tutorials to allow coursework briefing and discussion.

Coursework 1 - Individual Reflective Essay

You will be tasked with completing a reflective essay of 2500 words (+/- 10%). In the essay you will reflect on
your previous views on leadership, utilising your own experiences as well as theories and approaches to
leadership covered in the course in order to critically analyse and explain your views. You should then use
those reflections to identify areas of strength and development you will take into your current or future work
place. Your reflective essay should also include a minimum of 10 academic references. The marking guide for
the coursework is posted in the assessment section of the canvas site.

The assessment is due before 1200hrs (GMT) (1600hrs in Dubai, 2000hrs in Malaysia) on Monday 31st October

feedback will be available up to 3 weeks after the assessment is due, as per HWU policy. Feedback will be
released to you via Canvas.

Late Submissions of coursework. In line with University Policy, any work submitted after the set date and time
will automatically have a penalty applied. The penalty is a reduction by 30% of the mark awarded. Submission
will be accepted up to five working days after the submission deadline - your work will be marked, the late
penalty applied, and you will receive feedback. Coursework submitted after five working days will be awarded
NO grade and you will not be entitled to feedback.

Coursework 2 – Individual Annotated Bibliography

You will be tasked with completing an annotated bibliography of 2000 words (+/- 10%). In the bibliography you
will be tasked with firstly selecting a minimum of 3 of the thematic or theoretical options presented and
undertake your own research of the academic literature to identify 5 recent peer reviewed articles you
consider to be important to each theme or theory selected. You should then review and critically summarise
each of those papers . The marking guide for the coursework is posted in the assessment section of the canvas
site alongside detailed guidance and hints and tips.

The assessment is due before 1200hrs (GMT) (1600hrs in Dubai, 2000hrs in Malaysia) on Monday 12th

7. Academic Misconduct
At Heriot-Watt we expect all students to apply the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty in all
aspects of learning and assessment. You must read and adhere to the University’s policy on Academic Integrity
and complete the Academic Integrity Module included in the Canvas course.

To deal with academic misconduct, including activities associated with contract cheating, plagiarism and
collusion, the University has Student Discipline Policy and Procedures that apply to all students of the
University.
The University understands that assessment can be stressful for students, for a wide range of reasons.
Therefore, if you are feeling anxious about your assessment(s), please contact the Student Advice Hub, the
Student Well-Being Services, your Personal Tutor or your course leader for guidance and/or advice. If there
are circumstances out with your control preventing you from effectively engaging with and completing
assessed work, you should seek advice and consider applying for Mitigating Circumstances.
It’s vital that you seek support rather than resorting to cheating. If you are found guilty of academic misconduct
this will be reflected in your final degree transcript and you will be expected to resubmit your work or resit the
course; this may delay progression to the next stage of study and / or delay the award of your degree.

8. Reading, Preparation and Additional Resources

Within each week folder in the Canvas Course you will find what will be covered in each lecture and
workshop/discussion and how you can best prepare for these sessions. Each week folder details the Unit
learning outcomes and topics to be covered. Please read through these carefully before each lecture. There
are clear instructions for the activities, exercises and tasks you need to complete before each lecture and
workshop/discussion group. The Detailed Course Outline in section 9 of this handbook provides a good
overview of what to expect.

Any required pre-work involves selected aspects of the online course and readings; if pre-work is indicated for
a tutorial or discussion group, this should be considered a minimum required level of preparation. If you have
time and would like to do more work beforehand or after a lecture or workshop/discussion group, you should
work through the additional activities and readings indicated in the week folder.

The digital library is available giving access to a full range of resources, including e-books, databases and
journals. Resource lists, subject guides, skills development and online tutorials will also be available to support
your study. If you have any questions, our specialist Librarian (Marion Kennedy, EBS and Psychology, +44 131
451 3583, m.l.kennedy@hw.ac.uk ) will be ready to help with one-to-one advice.

Core Textbook. The core textbook for this course is available via the HWU library on all campuses but is also
available to purchase from most retailers including Blackwell’s & Amazon:

• Northhouse, P.G. (2021) Leadership: theory and practice, 9th Ed. Sage. ISBN: 978-1-0718-4091-7
Each week folder of the course contains suggestions for additional optional reading to develop your own
understanding of the subject area. These should not be considered as definitive but can be used to support
your directed learning and deeper understanding of the subject. Becoming more used to reading academic
journal articles will also support your development and further prepare you for your coursework as well as
research projects or dissertations.
