Conceptual Framework

Figure I. Conceptual Framework

Figure 1 presents the conceptual framework of the study. That consists of two
variables, Mental Health as an Independent Variables IV and Body Shaming as an
Dependent Variables DV.

Based on the figure above, the focus of the study is "The Effects of Body Shaming
on Mental Health of Philippine College of Advanced Arts and Technology students A.Y
2022-2023" The researcher identified two factors that affects the students alot. The first
factor is body shaming which according to the Oxford English Dictionary, body shaming
is the act or practice of humiliating a person based on their body type by making critical
and mocking statements about their body shape and size. Second is the mental health
which according to (Mental Health, 2022) Mental health includes our emotional,
psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. The
researchers used a quantitative method.
Weight and body type stigma can have long-term psychological and physical health
consequences. According to recent studies, people with disproportionate bodies are
frequently stigmatized. Being body-shamed during adolescence has both short-term
and long-term mental health consequences. Body shaming causes a variety of mental
health issues, including low self-esteem, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Body
shaming can cause feelings of avoidance and isolation as a result of the humiliation
experienced. Furthermore, body shaming can lead to poor eating habits. It can go in
either direction: eating too much to gain weight or refusing to eat to lose weight. This
puts people at risk of developing an eating disorder.

Quantitative methods are concerned with precise measurement and statistical,

mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through surveys, polls, and other
types of questionnaires, as well as the manipulation of pre-existing statistical data using
computational tools. The body shaming surveys are distributed at random, and the
researchers have devised questions to assist us in finding solutions to our study
concerns. Because this research topic is so sensitive, the researchers anticipate that
many people will not respond to our research survey. However, the researchers hope
that many people will be open about their feelings or express what they are going
through because it is better for them if they release it to others rather than themselves.
Regardless of the outcome, it will be used as a new opportunity to learn from it so that
the researchers can properly address it to other people who need support and
knowledge about how they feel and what they are going through. While there are many
students who are depressed and have suicidal thoughts, the researchers believe that
the best way to address the problem is to provide advice/awareness to all youth, such
as orientation or seminars.
