Subject: Islamiyat Studies
Assignment: Importance of Hadees as a second source of
Sharia-e-Islami
Definition of Hadees:-

Hades, Arabic Fades (“News” or “Story”), also spelled Hades, record of the

traditions or sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, revered and received as a major
source of religious law and moral guidance, second only to the authority of
the Qurʾān, the holy book of Islam. It might be defined as the biography of
Muhammad perpetuated by the long memory of his community for their
exemplification and obedience. The development of Hadees is a vital element
during the first three centuries of Islamic history, and its study provides a broad
index to the mind and ethos of Islam.

Importance of Hadees:-

Prophet(P.B.U.H) sayings (hadees) are sources of many Islam morals, since

they help Muslims in determining the prophet way to behave. Prophet sayings
(hadees) detail and explain what is briefed in Quran. Help Muslims to be closer to
Allah by doing what He wills and abstaining from what He forbids.

Shariah Meaning:

Meaning of the word “Shariah” is “a way”. In Islamic terminology, Shariah

meaning refers to a “Legal System”, or “The Law of Islam”. It refers to the matters
of religion that Allah has legislated for humans. Allah has sent messengers to
people, who guide them the Right Path. A path that lead them to happiness in this
world and hereafter. All messengers taught the same message that “Worship Only
One God”.

In Sharia-e-Islami:

The Qur'an is the principal source of Islamic law, the Sharia. It contains the rules
by which the Muslim world is governed (or should govern itself) and forms the
basis for relations between man and God, between individuals, whether Muslim
or non-Muslim, as well as between man and things which are part of creation. The
Sharia contains the rules by which a Muslim society is organized and governed,
and it provides the means to resolve conflicts among individuals and between the
individual and the state.

Second most important source of authority in Islam:-

The Sunnah is the second most important source of authority for Muslims and
describes the customs, practices and traditions of Muhammad. It teaches the
perfect path or model of how Muslims should live. Muslims can know that they
are obeying the will of Allah.
Hadees have been called "the backbone" of Islamic civilization, and within
Islam the authority of Hadees as a source for religious law and moral
guidance ranks second only to that of the Quran (which Muslims hold to be the
word of God revealed to Muhammad(P.B.U.H).

As the second source of authority in Islam, Hadees complements the Qur'an and

provides the most extensive source for Islamic law. The ultimate understanding of
the Qur'an depends upon the context of Muhammad's life and the ways in which
he demonstrated and applied its message.

The following are Hadees (sayings) by Prophet Mohamed on the subject:-

 “[w]hoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land -
it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he
had saved mankind entirely.”
 “The believers are but brethren, therefore make peace between your
brethren and be careful of (your duty to) Allah that mercy may be had on
you” [Quran, 49:10]
 Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who
purify themselves” [Quran, 2:222]
 We have sent among you a messenger from yourselves reciting to you Our
verses and purifying you and teaching you the Book and wisdom and
teaching you that which you did not know” [Quran 2:151]
 Indeed, I have rewarded them this Day for their patient endurance – that
they are the attainers [of success].

 Those people who show no mercy will receive no mercy from

Allah.” [Muslim, Al-Fada’il]

Conclusion:

Most Muslims believe that scriptural authority for Hadees comes from the
Quran, which enjoins Muslims to emulate Muhammad and obey his
judgement.
