ELECTROANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES

OBJECTIVES

Students will acquire sound knowledge regarding;

1. Theoretical,
2. Instrumental
3. application related aspects of different electro analytical techniques.

16
ELECTROANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES
Electroanalytical methods involve the measurement of either the electrical current
flowing between a pair of electrodes immersed in the solution tested (Voltametric
and amperometric methods) or an electrical potential developed between a pair of
electrodes immersed in the solution tested (potentiometric methods). In either
case, the measured parameter (current or potential) is proportional to the
concentration of analyte.

Course outlines
Potentiometer:
Potentiometry is one of the methods of electroanalytical
chemistry. It is usually employed to find the concentration of a
solute in solution. In potentiometric measurements, the
potential between two electrodes is measured.
Electrode potential, Nernst equation and its use for measuring
half-cell potential, different kinds of electrodes including glass
and calomel electrodes, working of potentiometer and its
applications including pH measurements, Ion selective electrode
systems, Ion exchange membrane electrode, solid state
membrane electrodes, and bio-membrane electrodes,
Potentiometric titrations.

Coulometry and Electrogravimetry
In electrogravimetry, the product is deposited on the electrode and is weighed.
Coulometery is an analytical method for measuring an unknown concentration of an
analyte in solution by completely converting the analyte from one oxidation state to
another.
Basic electrochemistry, principle, instrumentation of coulometry, principle,
instrumentation of electrogravimetry, consequences of electrogravimetry, Ohmic drop,
activation over potential, concentration and gas polarization, basic difference and
merits/demerits of coulometry and electrogravimetry.

6
Voltammetry and Polarography
Voltammetry is a technique in which the potential is varied in a regular manner while the
current is monitored. Polarography is a subtype of voltammetry that utilizes a liquid
metal electrode .
Basic principle, voltammogram, polarizable and non-polarizable electrodes, solid
electrodes, their scope and limitations, cyclic voltammetry, anodic stripping
voltammetry. voltammetric equation, basic concept of polarography and
interpretation of various polarographic curves, measurement of decomposition potential,
diffusion and limiting currents, derivation of Ilkovic equation, logarithmic analysis of
polarographic wave, advantages and limitation of dropping mercury electrode.
