It is hard to imagine today’s world without high-tech devices, especially smartphones.

We use mobile
phones a couple of hours every day to read news, communicate with others in various ways, watch
videos, write notes, etc. Because of that, a lot of people believe that we are becoming less capable of
thinking the more we rely on our phones.

There are a few arguments in favor of this thesis. Firstly, people nowadays more easily forget
things. We rely so much on the phones and make notes about everything in them that we aren’t
trying to remember things. Because of that, we forget basic things like card numbers, important
dates… Secondly, we use the internet to solve almost every problem. It is normal to “google
something” whenever we find ourselves in any kind of problematic situation rather than trying to use
our brains.

Like with many other things, there are also arguments against this thesis Thanks to mobile
phones, we can connect to the internet in only a few seconds and learn about events in the world.
Reading news develops our critical thinking because we must use our brains to review information
read online. Additionally, there are a lot of mobile applications which offer different ways of learning.
Good examples are apps for learning languages like Duolingo and Memory which allow learning any
language you like, especially ones that you couldn’t normally learn in your area.

There are both pros and cons of this view. On the one hand, with using smartphones we more
easily forget things and thinks less when finding a problem. On the other hand, reading news on the
mobile phone offers us the opportunity to develop our critical thinking and learn something through
apps. In my opinion, smartphones shouldn’t make us less capable of thinking if we use them in the
right ways, for example learning how to knit through YouTube videos.
